THE national airline flew back into profit this week when it posted profits of £53.2 million for 1995. The Aer Lingus net profit after exceptional charges was £15.1 million compared to a net loss of £123.6 million in 1994.
But Aer Lingus's chief executive, Mr Gary McGann, warned that the airline was still facing turbulent times and needed to almost double its operating profit. He said the group had to improve its return on sales through further cost reductions and increasing revenue.
Aer Lingus got a £50 million equity injection from the Government and Mr McGann was asked if it might return for more equity, as Air France and Sabena had done. "I happen to believe it would be in the worst interests of Aer Lingus to get more State capital," he replied.
The improved performance was also good news for Aer Lingus employees. Under an employee share participation scheme they will get a "dividend" of £500 each.
