  • Live from the trenches

    December 15, 2008 @ 10:14 am | by Jim Carroll

There are certain rituals which only occur at this time of year. I know Christmas is on its way when Old Moore’s Almanac appears in the shops (dude tells us that next summer is going to be a hot one and he hasn’t been wrong since 1947) and when the Countryman’s Christmas CD lands in the letterbox from the wild, wild west (this year, Nero’s festive compilation bigs up Erykah Badu, Fuck Buttons, Lykke Li, The Black Keys, Spook of the Thirteenth Lock and “The Thing” from Urbs and Cutex). Then, there are also a couple of event gigs on the agenda, live shows where, for one reason or another, it’s all a bit special and festive and a cut above the normal jib. We had a couple of them this weekend in this dirty old town and I’m sure you can add your own to this list.

The last word on Electric Picnic 2008 and who better than regular On The Road diarist Josh Ritter to deliver the view from the stage? He’s back in Ireland later this year, playing with a 24 piece orchestra at Vicar Street, Dublin on December 11 (show now sold out) and 12. A special Irish edition of his “Live at the 9.30 Club” album is out now, containing additional tracks and videos from his December 2007 Irish tour.

Even more On The Road diary writers announcing live shows. On the back of a packed show at the Picnic at the weekend, Josh Ritter plays Dublin’s Vicar Street on December 11 with a 24-piece orchestra, a repeat of sorts of his show at Boston’s Symphony Hall in June when he performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra.

  • On the Road – Josh Ritter in Denver and Targhee

    July 25, 2008 @ 12:50 pm | by Jim Carroll

We’re back on the road with Josh Ritter and he’s still hanging around the mountains. This time around, he’s on the festival trail with stories and pictures from the Mile High Festival and the Grand Targhee Festival involving beer, Tom Petty and Abraham Lincoln. Also below is a live video of “Overnite”. You’ll find this on the Irish edition of the “Live At The 9.30 Club” album, which is released here on September 5. “Overnite” is one of a number of bonus tracks and videos on the Irish release.

  • On the Road – Josh Ritter in Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Telluride

    July 23, 2008 @ 8:18 am | by Jim Carroll

Time for a confession: the latest On The Road diary comes from the man whose tour blog for The Huffington Post and Paste gave On The Record the notion to do these diaries in the first place. Josh Ritter is back on the road once again, this time co-headlining some shows through the US midwest with Andrew Bird and playing a few festivals as well. More words (and pictures) from the road to come. Josh plays the sold-out Electric Picnic festival at Stradbally, Co Laois on August 30.
