    The Cure for Electric Picnic?

    Jim Carroll

No doubt many of you have been keeping an eye on The Cure’s website over the last few weeks where they’ve been having the crack announcing European festival shows for summer 2012. An Irish show is definitely on the cards and, according to a source close to the band, is slated for “late summer”. This rules out a night at the Phoenix Park (licence only covers shows from July 5 to 26) leaving us with Slane (nah, can’t see enough Cureheads making it worth Lord Henry Mountcharles’ time to open the gate on his field with a bit of a hill in it – anyway, we’re hearing rumours about Coldplay or the Foo Fighters for Co Meath), Marlay Park (always possible) and the Electric Picnic. Seeing as the band are playing festivals rather than headline shows, we’re going with The Cure as the big headliner at the Electric Picnic this year. Mark this one as #gigileaks and come back to us when the Picnic announces its line-up in a few weeks.

If they come it would be epic if they did a set list like their recent Bestival slot.

If they want to attract people they could maybe go with NOT trying to be Primavera this year.

Aaron – so good they released it as an album – http://www.thecure.com/blog/default.aspx?nid=37049

John – huh? Primavera happens over the June bank holiday weekend, not September. The Irish competition for Primavera is Forbidden Fruit – reckon we’ll see a lot of Primavera-bound acts playing Forbidden Fruit seeing as it’s the same weekend.

I meant with the lineup. Why go to rainy EP if you’ve already seen, for example, Pulp (last year) /The Cure (this year) on a nice beach?

The Cure seem to be linked every year don’t they? Would be an interesting headliner seeing as there is no Oxegen this year. Would have expected the EP organisers to go for a younger headliner to try nab some of that crowd (not that I would want this or anything but sales for fests are not good these days) but these things are arranged a long time in advance I suppose.

Bon Ivor and The Cure , not bad so far . They really need to be careful and not book any act that could attract skangers this year as no oxegen. And idea’s for 3rd headliner ? Florence would be worth a bet but love to see someone like Manu Chao , The National ( if album is out), Happy Mondays / James would be fun ( Since Baggy is back) , The Pogues would be great crack

Personally speaking, I really hope there’s a generous Primavera/Forbidden Fruit cross-over. I’ve been salivating over the Primavera line-up but won’t make it this year…anyone else announced/leaked for FF bar the might Factory Floor?

Just listening to Shaun Ryder on the breakfast show on Phantom and he when he was asked if they had any gigs lined up here he said that nothing was confirmed but when pushed that hypothetically could The Happy Mondays support another recently reformed band he answered yes. If the Happy Mondays do play support to the Stone Roses in the Phoenix Park would that rule them out for EP?

The Cure for EP – there set at Oxegen a few years ago was amazing! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease be true!!

I reckon Florence is a dead cert, she’s headlining Oya in Norway so that’s usually a good indicator.

Jim, have you heard anything about the Factory Floor show in Tripod? Is it just a club night that they’re DJ-ing at or a proper live show?

john @ 4 – ah, I see. That has happened in previous years – those who go to Primavera rarely go to EP, but then again few who go to Primavera have bothered with EP for several years, esp not since PS has become the “hip” fest

G-man @ 5 – in the middle of researching a longer post about Irish festivals 2012 and that point about where the Oxegen faithful are going will be examined

Damo @ 6 – “skangers”? Ah c’mon, this isn’t Broadsheet. Keep it clean. “Young, uncouth, unruly, energetic, fun-loving scoundrels and lasses” will do instead.

Robert @ 7 – Grimes also confirmed for FF

Redhead @ 8 – going on calls and texts this morning, we can take it that Cure speculation is on the money.

pmckenna @ 9 – Factory Floor playing Banquet at Tripod on Sat week Feb 3 – see http://www.facebook.com/banquetdublin

as mentioned last week, the image on their summer festival dates page, when unscrambled, has a venue smack bang in the middle of Laois. several of the cities in the image has subsequently been announced for gigs.

so that’s the usual “nostalgia act” sorted. Orbital have a new album out soon, a good possibility for the “big name popular in the 90s/00s dance act” headliner.

ciaran – yep, it was that mention last week here and a few others elsewhere which sent me off to do some digging. To be honest, I’m more interested (naturally) in acts down the card, newer acts, but if they get Orbital as well as The Cure and Bon Iver, that’s a fairly solid bill to be working off.

god save us from “heritage” dance acts. Orbital’s set in 2009 was a complete snooze. They should have gone out on a high with that final Oxegen appearance.

No interest in Orbital , I cant stand that Belinda Caralie crap they have been hawking for twenty years , Prodigy are only 90’s dance act they havent played apart from Daft punk , either would be better IMO

I hope EP gets all Oxegen indie acts and RNB / Hip hop stuff gets its own day somewhere else for the kids

Hasnt been an new Irish act in a long time that could play the main stage, bored of frames/ bell x1 , like to see Jape make the jump up , needs a killer single

The Cure? Man, they sucked at Oxegen back in 2004, didnt bother with the hits. Saw them again in London a few years later, even worse, i cant see how they are going to be any different this late on. If only Depeche Mode were active this year, they would be a superb headliner for EP.

to Paula @ 18 – Dunno which Cure set you watched at Oxegen 2004 but they played 8 sibgles in a 20 song set…that’s quite a few hits if you ask me.

Ive seen them live about 20 times and Oxegen , despite the audience, was once of the best

Actually come to think of it, they did play a few singles, sorry, but they were played in a “lets get these tunes out of the way” sort of fashion and a large portion of their set consisted of the self-titled album at the time which i honestly thought was their worst ever and had much of the audience sleeping. The crowd had shrunk quite a bit towards the end of their set also and couple that with Hot Press’s bad review of their appearance, i honestly didnt think the band would ever come back to Ireland. I dont think they will be a large draw at EP, but thats just my opinion.

Paul, sorry to be pedantic but they played 6 songs from the self titled album..from a 20 song set…hardly a large portion. However one thing The Cure do not do live is put on an exhuberant stage show ala Dave Gahan and DM. I guess they feel that that they prefer the music to speak for itself without a load of prancing around and audience interaction. So perhaps thats why people became disinterested. I agree that they wont be the major attraction at EP (depending on who else is announced) but I do think there will be a lot of interest in them.

My only concern is that EP will be overun this year with the usual Oxegen attendees

OK fair enough, Oxegen 2004 was my first Cure show and remains the gig that i officially fell out of love with the band, i loved them as a teen growing up in Cork but somehow i just felt let down by their appearance. I suppose i just didnt like them as much i thought i did.

As for the usual “Oxegen attendees” i think i know what you mean, but you get these at every festival, there are always a portion of people there for any reason other than to see bands.

I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve seen The Cure – I’ve picked Sweden, Belgium and the 2 german gigs for this summer. Personally I would like them to come here, but after the mass walkout during what I would class as one of the best shows I’ve seen,in oxegen I wouldn’t hold my breath. Smith is known to hold grudges!
