The soundtrack composer who scored “Midnight Cowboy”, “Born Free”, “Goldfinger”, “From Russia With Love” and many other classic films has died. Obituary here.

yeah i heard about this earlier, sad day, probably my fav soundtrack composer, his range from classical to pop and everywhere in bewteen was incredible from zulu to the persuaders he was always bang on the money . he sometimes managed to make bad films good just beacuse of his tunes

    • Jim Carroll says:

petee – that’s the sign of a true class composer – one who can make bad films sound good.

Yeah this was sad news this morning. A fine composer who brought a quintessential Englishness to his music, I suppose thats one of the reasons why he was the ideal candidate for Bond. Mojo did an article on him many years ago, I remember being surprised about how much of a player he was in the swinging 60′s, he even had the requisite E-type Jag. Definitely not your typical baton waver.

Fave piece is You Only Live Twice with Nancy Sinatra.

Here’s one of my favourite Barry bits, “Florida Fantasy”. I remember it as the theme tune to the BBC kids’ nature programme, “Wildtrack”, but it first appears during Ratso’s hilarious fantasy sequence in “Midnight Cowboy”:

So the harmonica piece at the end of Midnight Cowboy – played by Toots Thielmans – was that composed by John Barry? That’s a beautiful piece of music.

    • robespierre says:

I think one of his most complete scores was Robin & Marian from a so, so movie.

Also loved the paranoid dystopia of the score for the Ipcriss File.

    • So sad to hear about this. A true musical genius.
