Electric Picnic 2010 – here we go

    Jim Carroll

The first batch of acts for Electric Picnic 2010 will be announced round about lunchtime today. OTR is currently on a top secret mission in deepest New Mexico which means we’re six hours behind you, but we’ll get up early on this occasion to add to the gaiety of the nation once again. Between now and then, let the wild guesswork begin.

UPDATE: The mad guesses can end ‘cos here’s the official list. Question: it just me or does this look a lot more appetising than previous Picnic start-up lists?

    Roxy Music
    LCD Soundsystem
    Massive Attack
    The National
    PiL (YES!)
    Leftfield
Gil Scott-Heron (as first confirmed months ago by OTR readers)
    The Frames
Imelda May (is there anyone in the country who hasn’t seen her live at this stage?)
    Modest Mouse
    New Pornographers
    Seasick Steve
    808 State
    Hot Chip
Fever Ray (who will at least get to play to more people in Ireland this summer)
    Beach House
    Jonsi
    Edan
    Fat Freddy’s Drop
    The Waterboys
    Liquid Liquid (YES!)
    Booka Shade
    The Horrors
    The Big Pink
    The Low Anthem
    Mr Scruff
Paul Brady (this year’s Christy Moore)
    Monotonix
    Cymande (hell yeah!)
Bloody Beetroots (with their Death Crew 77 live band)
    Steve Earle
    Bad Lieutenant
    Crystal Castles
    Afro Celt Soundsystem
    Mumford & Sons
    Here We Go Magic
    Field Music
    Caribou
    Dublin Gospel Choir
    Messiah J & The Expert
    Adrian Crowley
    Villagers
Redneck Manifesto (that’s more Irish acts than Oxegen already)
    Breakastra
    Memory Tapes
    Steve Mason

Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, followed by The Rye each night in the woods at 3am. Wonder which one of those acts might be on the bill…?

@Eoin – The Rye – what a great band. Sadly the only ones from that list I see making it to Stradbally!

    I’m banking on:

    Jonsi
    Belle and Sebastian
    Roxy Music
    LCD Soundsystem
    Hot Chip
    Passion Pit
    The Frames
    The National
    Yeasayer
    Possibly Chemical Brothers
Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip
    M.I.A.

Roll on the ‘not as good as 07′ posts, the bitching about the line up and so on.

I think EP needs to do something a bit special for the ‘regulars’ – there was universal agreement with people I spoke to that while they had fun at EP it wasn’t the craic it used to be, and that 250 notes is a bit much.

The only exception to that consensus was my girlfriend who absolutely loved it without complaint regardless of the weather and lineup – but it was her first EP

    Excellent announcement.

@26 This is the year EP may have just turned back to what made it brilliant in the first place. Take all the emphasis off of the “huge” headliners and have a very strong overall line-up.

Although it is worth it if they are legends it is a pain having all 40,000 capacity trying to see the headliner on the main stage at the end of the night. this should even things out across all the stages

As per last year, find this initial line up disappointing but it could be turned around with about 10 more quality acts. And they will probably find them.

Weather made it truely miserable last year tho so.. in two minds.

Did a quick tot up of acts i’d like to see from the list and only got 14, would love to see the National and Jonsi should be great but will be seeing him in New York.

    1. The National
    2. Jonsi
    3. LCD Soundsystem
    4. The Frames
    5. Massive Attack
    6. Hot Chip
    7. Leftfield
    8. Crystal Castles
    9. Adrian Crowley

Pretty decent and definitely a much stronger initial line-up than the last couple of years. More excited about Steve Mason than anybody else – his forthcoming album is just soooo good – but there’s plenty more there. Much stronger than Oxegen, and certainly more enticing. Great there’s so many strong Irish acts there (and not added at the last minute a la Oxegen) and before all the usual bitching starts, can I just add it’s nice to see The Frames back…

    @30

I’m not looking for “huge headliners”, I know what made EP great. But resurrecting bands that may be a quirky and nostalgic for a few hasn’t worked in my opinion. Human League, Pet Shop Boys et al? I’ve no interest anyhow. They weren’t that good then and they aren’t that good now. Ditto Roxy Music. The Rockabilly love in is a bit of a turn off for me and I cannot understand what people see in Hot Chip. I watched them there a few years ago and it reminded me of Timmy Mallet, only more annoying.

Anyhow, each to their own, that’s what makes it good I suppose. On second glance, it ain’t that bad. I might just go. As long as the delorentos don’t turn up I’ll be happy enough.

Considering he has no record company backing, and he basically paid for the UK dates before Christmas himself from the money he made from that butter commercial, I don’t see how that’s money grabbing.

He’s a working artist like any other and if he doesn’t work, he doesn’t get paid. There’s a demand to see PIL so why wouldn’t he do it to earn a few quid ?

There is real passion in this PIL reunion and you can tell it’s what Lydon really want’s to be doing rather than the punk pantomime act that was the Pistols reunion.

Anyway, this is one of the better line-up announcements in recent years…and there are MORE to be announced, hopefully ASIWYFA. This line-up is way better what Latitude or Bestival in the UK have announced so far, so well done to all concerned. Delighted to see Fever Ray there – saw her twice last year and you are all in for a treat. You haven’t seen anything like here live show before…The National, PIL, Jonsi from Sigur Ros, Roxy Music, Beach House, Leftfield, Massive Attack are brilliant live…could have done without Paul Brady (??) and Imelda May and her overrated ‘’rockabilly’’ rubbish but all in all, it’s looking looking pretty good so far.

Best EP line up for quite a while imo. There’s more than enough there already to keep me happy for a weekend and I’m sure there’ll be some decent additions coming down the line. If there wasn’t such a crossover with the Sonar line up I’d be even happier but that’s to be expected.

not hugely fussed with the lineup tbh.

some good acts, no doubt, but overall very lacking.

can only hope there’s a few more electronic type acts to be added, just look at Bestival:
    Plastikman
    Flying Lotus
    Four Tet
    Gaslamp Killer
    Nathan Fake
    Ulrich Schnauss
    Joy Orbison,
    and plenty more…

but i suppose it makes no difference to the ever-growing chunk of the audience who’ve no clue about 90% of the lineup and don’t mind their 250quid going on cookery lesson workshops and jugglers….

    @ Padjo

Roxy Music “weren’t that good then and they aren’t that good now”? Of all the head-up-hole heresy it has been my ongoing displeasure to read on forums far and wide, that takes the fuggin’ Fig Roll.

If you can dip into any of the first four Roxy albums and find stuff that isn’t “that good”, then it’s time the taste police sent a man to fix Padjo’s jukebox.

This is not a matter of taste. Roxy Music are not merely “quirky” or “nostalgic”. How can you disdain the most influential electronic music of the last 30 years (save Kraftwerk)?

Anyhow, kudos to the Picnic crew. I can see what they are trying to do here with the Roxy-Leftfield-Massive-LCD continuum. This will bring the crowds, with bells on. The early bird tickets @ 199 each are good value.

“Me me over here over here!!” – I haven’t seen Imelda May yet.

Really liking this initial announcement… Also Limerick’s, eh, favourite / only (?) rap duo The Rubber Bandits shall be playing apparently. In two minds as to whether this adds to the line-up or not. Probably does.

Think some of these comments prove that there’s just no pleasing some people! Under serious pressure to deliver, the EP organisers have more than come up with the goods in my book. This is a brilliant lineup, with enough quality and variety to please all but the harshest of cynics. Ticket pricing is a separate issue that’s beyond the promoters’ control, just like the price of a pint of milk in this country.

    Roll on September!

    Might get a day ticket.

240 is way too much, we have our pick of european festivals
for half the price and better craic.

Why do people keep referring to Primavera and foreign festivals as better value for money? Nearly every country in the world is better value for money than Ireland so why not move there?

I dont see everyone giving out about the price of milk, teabags, alcohol etc half as much.

All these things are half the price on the continent so technically foreign festivals should be half the price of Electric Picnic which they are not.

If you do not like the line-up then do not go but comparing to prices of other countries is ridiculous

Finn@72, no you’re not! I can’t wait to see the New Pornographers, the couple of new songs i’ve heard sound great, hope Neko Case is with them, but i doubt it. Really excited Fever Ray is coming, i’ve managed to miss her before, love the album, and Beach House were wonderful in Whelans and theirs is probably my fav album of the year so far.

ada @ 82 – they sure were. Please note that, as of now, there are no day tickets for EP. Actually, now that I remember, Nialler9 had audio of a Homelands show they did back in 2000. http://www.nialler9.com/2007/05/29/leftfield-live-homelands-2000-full-set/

G-Man – well, I’m going to Primavera because the line-up is hot, the prices are reasonable and Barcelona is a fantastic place to go any time. I hear what you are saying but those points have been raised and aired here many, many times before – prices are cheaper elsewhere because everything is cheaper elsewhere, including wages. People do a compare and contrast to show what you can get for, say, €500 gigging money by going to Primavera (ticket + flight + accom) versus the same for EP or Oxegen.

Ciaran – I think Fever Ray @ EP will be massive. Way, way, way, way, way more suitable for them than the Dance Shed at Oxegen last year. Then again, the act and the agent succumbed to a big money offer last year.

Mully – that’s up there with “mumford & sons are the new cranberries” from albinicus in the chuckle stakes

And regarding the Dance Shed, let’s not forget that we, the Irish people, probably own a chunk of it via our former Minister for Finance When We Had Finance, Charlie McCreeevy, who gave a €15 million grant towards its contruction when he was in charge of the cash.

Comparing the difference in the price of milk here & on the continent isn’t the same as comparing the difference between festivals – with festivals the difference is a matter of a few hundred euro…if you’re gonna get the same lineup abroad, with better weather and a holiday to boot then of course you’re gonna be delighted with your lot.
But as has been said before on here, the reason we’re paying more is because whoever books the bands knows they can get that price here! I’m happy enough to pay for an EP ticket – the overall experience justifies the price for me, of course i’d love it to be cheaper – who wouldn’t, but if others aren’t happy with the price then voting with their feet is the only way to do it….but this is Ireland….that’s never going to happen!

    G-Man:

I’m not going to pop across to Spain for a pint of milk.

Festival organisers here have to realise that they are in direct competition with foreign festivals because of the ease of travel and justify the price accordingly.

It’s a decent start, but in my opinion needs a couple more acts that make you sit up and take notice, and yes, justify the €240 price tag

One normal gig is 20 or 30 euro. You get all those bands plus the atmosphere and the other non-music things for Euro 240.

It’s an ok price in my book – a weekend away in a hotel would cost you as much and you have to create your own entertainment there!

Miserable Irish. Always complaining. A consistently great festival with a great lineup and most people can only moan about the price and the say the lineup is ‘meh’. Good luck climbing out of your horrible recession with that attitude…

On first view I wasn’t enthused but it looks like there’s enough going on there to head down to it. The problem is my wife thinks the line up is pony. As a result she won’t be going so inevitably I’ll be found going loopy in the woods after doing a load of ‘foke’ I got from the closing down sale in the D.3 Head Shop.
