Grizzly Bear, Midlake, Camera Obscura and Villagers, Cork, June

    Jim Carroll

Grizzly Bear play their only Irish show of 2010 at Live at the Marquee, Cork on June 25. Also on the pretty darn awesome Harmonic bill: Midlake, Camera Obscura and Villagers (whose debut album is one of the sweetest things I’ve heard in years). Tickets are €35 and go on sale on Friday.

“Harmonic was put together by Aiken Promotions and independent promoter Leagues O’Toole (Foggy Notions), with a view to forming a mass gathering of independent music lovers in Cork City.”

Will probably be watching the football to be honest. Only really a fan of Midlake and they were a bit hit and miss in Vicar St a few weeks back…

It will be very interesting to see what comes of this. Great announcement.

Got an email from the promoters saying they were pulling it but luckily I convinced them to go ahead with it, just for my own personal safety. I don’t want to be lynched by indier-than-thou bloggers and OTR readers.:-)

Not crazy about that Villagers song (and have loved what I heard previously) — musically it’s pretty solid buy lyrically its rather wayward.

Well I’m in the roadtrip category. Have an aversion to the over-hyped Portuguese after having to endure one of the worst games of international football i’ve ever experienced when they played England a good few years back. Speaking of…ahem….”music” and football will there be any World Cup songs released this year i wonder? You know, the cheesy videos of the players horsing around in the studio, singing badly and generally reminding us why they should stick to the day jobs? Oh no! I’ve “Fog on’t Tyne” in me head now. Damn the unrelenting cruelty of the thought process…!!

Nice booking. This will be the biggest convention of cool t-shirts Cork has seen in years.

As a gig goer residing in Cork I’ve often raged against a) all the best gigs in Dublin being on bloody Tuesdays and the like and b) the Marquee pandering to wannabe pop chavs, once a decade gig goers and rednecks.

So I will buy tickets forthwith, even though Grizzly Bear doesn’t do much for me…

Er, how do you get on the presale list?

Hopefully Cork will be a flute free zone on june 25th :)

That was the downer at Vicar Street far too much flute and of course the new songs didnt quite stand up to the older songs.

Still Grizzly Bear and Camera Obscura on my own own doorstep happy days.

Saw Efterklang and Slaraffenland in Whelans last night – well worth a trip to see – great gig especially if you like Grizzly Bear, Beach House, Polar Bear etc. Agree with the wish for flute free zone – saw Midlake in Vicar Street after loving the trials…. album. The onslaught of Jethro Tull – esque, Moody Blues and Mike Oldfield jazz flute stylings was v depressing
