Have you picked up The Fresh & Onlys’ s/t album from last year? It was joint top of my 2009 list. They, along with Thee Oh Sees are amongst my favourite bands right now. Thee Oh Sees are bleeding me dry with their release rate :p

If you haven’t already, give Sonny & The Sunsets a spin. It’s Sonny Smith, with help from Shayde and Tim from The Fresh & Onlys, plus Kelley Stoltz. Can’t imagine you won’t like them.

colette – check out the “Lost & Found” album on BBE for more ace cuts like that. And I’m looking fwd to hearing more from Lucy Love

fiona – they’re now on my (very lengthy) list of bands to see at SXSW next week. And I have a couple of Sonny & The Sunsets tunes in the ever growing iTunes library to get around to.

Really diggin’ the Gonjasufi album on Warp. Picked it up on Monday and have listened to it on a daily basis since. Read a review that referred to its 1-hour running time and recalled thinking it was much, much shorter than that which is a good sign. Perhaps i’ll be able to work myself up to Joanna Newsom’s new album which i’m told is a cracker though 2-hours seems like a lot to get stuck into in my, short-attentioned spanning opinion. I really, really loved The Milk-Eyed Mender and found Ys way too dense and meandering for my tastes. It’s not that i’m put-off by tracks with 17 minutes plus run-times (although a short, sharp shot of sweet or sour noise is always good!) but i found it hard to give a shit about putting the time in. Felt too academic an approach to listening to music as i think it should be a visceral, reflex reaction. Have been mulling over the idea of giving her another few hours of my time but i can’t help getting through the experience of the Ys obstacle (Ys-tacle anyone?). Any check it out yet? Perhaps there’re some tunes more in line or developed from the thread of The Milk-Eyed Mender that i could treat myself to?

Fergal – I hear you about the Joanna Newsom album – the sheer scale of the thing is putting me off (that and I’ve just had the 2 busiest weeks of the year back to back). I’m curious to hear what people make of it – people beyond those who’ve reviewed it especially. How has it sold? Has it any chance of going beyond the typical Joanna Newsom audience?

Not much of a chance that J-New’s (copyright Adam Prince Billy) new album will endear her to new fans at all. It’s a lovely sprawling long form album but it has discernable peaks really. Just two hours of lovely laidback harp, piano, her voice and little else. It certainly feels less poppy than YS which was hard going in itself of course but ultimately rewarding.

Have only listened to two of the three from the Joanna Newsom album…same thing with scale and as much as I like her voice more than an hour in one setting is too much. I do think that the tunes are more approachable than Ys but I don’t think it’s going to be her breakout album.

On other tunes front I really liked the track Boogity Boogity Boogity from Los Massieras- at least I think that was the one since the Phantom site told me so…will have to listen to it again to make sure but it was really a great tune!

I have tried many times to listen to, and enjoy, Joanna Newsom’s music. Each time I’ve ended up feeling scarred both aurally and emotionally. I’d rather listen to caterwauling accompanied by nails on a chalkboard.

The new Joanna Newsom album isnt as yelpy as i thought the first two were. Bits of it are very 70’s AOR stuff similar to the some of the sound off the Midlake album. Think that Rilo Kiley do that stuff a lot better. The three cds get a bit annoying just trying to listen to the whole album in one go. Will just have to load onto the zen and listen interuption free. Still think that Mojo went a bit over the op with their review but then again the guy was initially on pain relief. To paraphrase Dunphy its a good album not a great album.

spacey @ 11 – I give the new Tanlines EP two thumbs up!

Tim @ 19 – “Boogity Boogity Boogity” is a zinger but there were loads of zingers in the second hour last night IMHO

Wow, that’s a mixed set of views on J-New. I thought myself from the couple of tracks I heard that the reviews were a tad over the top. I assume Drag City don’t see as the album to bankroll a move to the Cayman Islands?

I’m with Feather @ 21 on this one. Hard and all as I tried, I could never get into Joanna Newsom before this one. Not really sure what it is about ‘Have One One Me’, but it’s definitely more approachable and less academic-sounding than her earlier stuff. Or maybe I’m just getting old! And yeah, I’m digging the ’70s vibe a lot too.

Vis-a-vis running time, I haven’t actually sat down and listened to the thing in its entirety yet I must admit. I’ve been playing each disc separately. Maybe this weekend…

Life’s way too short for a Joanna Newsom triple album. Way too short. Anyone see that video of her that Nialler9 had of her playing live on ‘Fallon’? Bizarre facial expressions, to say the least. There’s some gorgeous stuff on the ‘Milk-Eyed Mender’ but she lost me after that. Her music is…hard work and it never should be.

I think Mojo gushed over Newsom because very few artists these days would have the audacity to release a triple album of music with long meandering passages. It reminded them of their old Genesis LPs!

I think its a good album but so many of the songs are similar in tone, 70% of the album becomes one long harp piece that slows down and speeds up.

I like her though, I wonder does she make those facial expressions in the sack aswell? (sorry)

Jaysus, I’ve spent an hour listening to J-New and am still not finished with it. I have to say, it’s damn hard work so far. I think it’s an album you have to be in the mood for and trying to get three weeks work done in a week ain’t the time for it. Think the reviews I’ve read are also VERY fanboy-ish going on what I’ve heard so far. It’s like “Metal Machine Music” for flower children and hippies.

If this thing takes off I want it on the record (on the record on the record) that he got J-New from me.

Petty? Moi? It’s just that I have so little going for me.

I really like the new album but I am something of a raging fanboy for her insofar and I think she’s one of the most consistantly fascinating figures in contemporary indie music. Not just because I really dig her music but also because despite how people try to pigeonhole her as some sort of airy fairy elf queen of pitchfork indie she just shrugs it off and does whatever she feels like with little regard for the public perception of her.

I think I read online she had first week US sales of 9,000.

7,000? Hmm…i don’t really have anything to compare that with i suppose. Well most of the reviews i’ve read of her album have been on websites and in magazines that would already be embedded with the indie/alternative Panzer division so i don’t suppose that’s a surprise really. In fact, i’d guess that most indie artists (in the truest sense of the word) are slightly off-radar so i would be more surprised if she was supernova as a result of a triple album release. I’d be surprised if she went supernova, fullstop! I’m deffo going to give the more accessible tracks a go at some stage this year. In the meantime i’m quite happy with PeachPlumPear and the like :-)
