Choice Music Prize – take five

    Jim Carroll

It’s Choice Music Prize Day for the fifth year in a row. Man, I never thought I’d still be doing this five years on – what happened to my plans to take up golf and ostrich farming?

Anyway, you know the score. 8 of the 10 nominated acts playing live in Dublin’s Vicar Street tonight. 12 judges sitting around a table in a locked cellar deciding who wins the gong and €10,000 cheque for Irish Album of the Year 2009. The world and its missus getting ready for the post-event shouting and screaming and stomping of feet here and elsewhere. It’s all so beautiful.

If you want to come along, there will be tickets on sale at the venue (€27), doors open at 7pm and the action gets underway at 7.30pm sharp with Codes opening the show. If you can’t make it, Today FM’s Paul McLoone will be broadcasting live from the venue from 7pm. The winner will be announced round about 10.30pm-10.35pm.

So, with less than 12 hours to go before the winner is announced, who do you reckon is going to leave Dublin 8 tonight with a nice trophy and a chicken’s neck for 10k?

    * Declaration of interest: I’m the co-founder of this yoke and am also the non-voting chairman of the judging panel. But you knew that.

I reckon Julie Feeney will get it, tho hoping it’s her or ASIFYFA. (No offence to any of the others, like. Best of luck and all that!)

Phantom say doors are at 7.30 and the show is at 8. You better get them for that.

If there was a gun to my head and had to choose who was going to win tonight, I’d say Adrian. Although I also have a weird feeling CODES will do well.

I think Adrian Crowley will take it this year. He ticks all the right boxes. Not too mainstream, but doesn’t make outlandish inaccessible music (the way many felt about past winner SEBP), and he’s performing on the night, which has to be a help.

But maybe after a solo fella last year, and a band the previous year, it’s time for a lady to win. No, no, I’ll stick to my guns. Adrian Crowley to win.

I’m giving it a few goes but I just can’t get the big ASIWYFA love. They’re good, granted but they dont do it for me the way Adebisi Shank or even The Cast of Cheers.

Would be happy if Julie Feeney, Adrian Crowley, Duckworth Lewis or ASIWYFA won, but I’ve said all along that I think Valerie Francis will nab it.

Only wish I’d put my Paddy Power cash earlier – she’s now the 5/2 favourite. Grrr.

Andrew – unfortunately, the PPI board objected to their late entry and they’ve cancelled. Jedward are playing instead.

I’ll go for Duckworth Lewis Method. Quirky almost experimental album with a cult following. Ticks all the boxes.

But then again, will the judges seek to award the prize to an act who they feel deserves wider recognition?

    Hmmm.

A very good selection of albums up for the Choice this year i have to say. I’d plum for Dark Room Notes though i’m basing that on my own particular tastes as opposed to the boxes that should be ticked. The DLM album is really good and perhaps they’re in with a shout though while I had the album on constant rotation for a period during the late summer it has been a while since i’ve dusted it off. Anyway, that’s always the way with some music isn’t it? You gorge and over-indulge and lose the taste for a while but come back later on with a renewed appetite. Our palate changes, apparently every 7 years and it’s bound to be a lesser period for the aural equivalent. Despite this i find that the more i listen to music and “new” artists (to me) the better i appreciate the more established tunes in my collection. Apolgies, i went completely off point there. What were we talking about again?

I agree with Una. I have a weird feeling also Codes might nab it but I think all albums nominated this year are worthy winners. There are no bad albums in the mix. Valerie Francis or ASIWYFA I would like to see take it.

Valerie Francis or And So I Watch You From Afar would be my preferences, if not just for their music then for their work ethic, but it is just for their music, isn’t it? I don’t think Codes or Dark Room Notes’ albums are varied enough to win it. Likewise, I don’t see a former Meteor winner (Laura Izibor) or Bell X1 (poorest album of their career) getting it. Julie Feeney and (half) of the Duckworth-Lewis Method have won it before, which will probably go against them, but the latter’s album really is something special. Adrian Crowley’s album is good. The Swell Season’s isn’t great.

    So… Far or Fran.

Best of luck to all of them but I think the ASIWYFA album is in a different league to the others on the list. Their Fugazi – meets – Mogwai wall of sound completely floors you on first listen and stands up to repeated plays. Saw them play an in-store in Tower last night and they blew the roof off the place.

I like Julie Feeneys album. But it would be weird if she were to win, as it may not acknowledge the great diversity of Irish music that is out there now.

Also like Valerie Francis, but if am allowed to go on heart alone I hope Adrian Crowley wins it.

    Up the quiet music makers.

    Much more fun.

I managed to get Valerie Francis at 5/1, I’ve bet on the Choice for the last three years and I usually put a bet on the Mercury too.. haven’t won my money back yet but I remain optimistic!

I’d be happy with Valerie, Adrian or Duckworth Lewis taking the cheque tonight- good luck with it Jim, looking forward to the live show.

@19 I’ve placed a couple of bets every year inc. this. You could do a live book in vicar st on the night and (more than likely) make a killing – like Premiership clubs do on matchdays in the stadium.

Let me be the first to express my OUTRAGE at the awarding of this year’s prize to such an unworthy act… ALL the other nominees deserved it more… Did the judges even LISTEN to the albums etc. etc.

Amazing tension on this today, it’s great to see everyone on such a buzz, vaunting their favourites. There’s gonna be some atmosphere in the judges’ quarters all right.

I didn’t put money on ASIWYFA and will be seeing them at the Mercantile. Should be a deadly night for absolutely everyone!

hopefully adrain crowley-find it hard to believe ASIWYFA are one of the favs considering Adebisi didn’t even get a nomination last year for what is a much more original album in a similar genre-don’t see what the former bring to the table at all in terms of originality
