Christmas card from a plugger in Minneapolis

    Jim Carroll

In The Ticket this week, we share some horchata with Vampire Weekend, talk back-story with The Antlers, come up with some sequels which might – might – be better than the original flick, get all boxed-up for Christmas and round up some of the readers’ comments about the “controversial” lists of albums and movies of the decade.

Acts in the New Music frame are Unicorn Kid, Pearl Harbor, Phantogram, Dinosaur Feathers and Lido Pimienta, while there’s Music News on Christmas FM, The Magic Numbers in Trim and Shane McGowan’s TV show about gardening.

Album of the week comes from Jesca Hoop and there are also reviews of releases from 30 Seconds to Mars, The Boy Least Likey to, Neon Indian, Woodsman, “5 Years of Hyperdub”, Mulatu Astatke, John Barry, Abram Wilson, Carla Bley and many more.

New films for you to throw your popcorn at this week are Me and Orson Wells, The Descent Pt 2, The Merry Gentleman, Johnny Mad Dog, Southland Tales, The Girlfriend Experience, Cracks, Planet 51 and Situations Vacant. Plus movie news, DVD reviews and DC’s weekly movie quiz.

The Ticket: please enjoy culture responsibly.

Feed your head: the Intravenous Music Exhibition takes place in Waterford’s Soma Gallery (Lombard St.) from December 7 to 12 with daily gigs at 1pm, seminars, photo exhibitions and more. Check out their website for more info.

Feed your head (2): don’t forget the Beatyard event in the Twisted Pepper (Middle Abbey Street, Dublin) tomorrow from noon. Loads and loads of stuff going on and the full schedule here.

Listastic: last call for anyone who wants to submit their music highs and lows for 2009. If you want to have you say, you can have it here.

The OTR community noticeboard is now open for business. Plug and recommend away to your heart’s content, but remember to declare an interest where one should be declared. Please note that plugs are accepted on the whim of OTR and may be edited for length/clarity/common sense. Events with a commercial sponsor are really ads and will probably not be published in this slot. Have a most wonderful weekend.

Saw Phantogram perform at CMJ in October. They created a huge sound for just two people on stage. Blew The XX away. Managed to get a preview copy of the album too. Very, very good.

Word is that James McMorrow has gone and recorded a pretty decent debut album. Has anyone here heard it yet?

Have not seen him since he supported DM Stith (that Bon Iver breakthrough never quite materialised, did it?) early on this year and that was a marked improvement on any previous occasion that I have seen him play, so hopefully the upward progression is being maintained…

Great, great album but a terrible live show. Plus he had problems with his live show, which didn’t help matters

“For me, the best shows are where I don’t feel I have to be shy. I can make mistakes and it doesn’t matter because people are just there to see me. At those shows, I’ve always felt pretty confident and happy.

“Over the last few months, I’ve learned that I have limits. I don’t want to do festivals any more and I don’t want to play a lot of shows. I want to play shows that I and the musicians I play with have time to prepare for.”

This is an article I wrote about DIY start-ups and the like around the country. It was written for the current Visual Artists News Sheet so only beret-wearing knobs have read it (only joking, you lovely artists!). Mostly focusing on art galleries and such but music yokes too. Enjoy!

    ALSO!
This coming Thursday 10th December, Zabba will be playing The Bernard Shaw. It’s part of LobsterBoy’s monthly club, it starts at 8pm and it’s free in. For that handsome price you’ll get a longer-than-any-of-us-bargained-for live set from Zabba as well as a bizarre 5-person DJ set earlier in the night while you enjoy other free goodies (some of which will hopefully be edible). There’ll be surprise guests and other nonsense on the night to make you feel like you’ve stumbled into the Late Late Toy Show after accidentally eating the batteries from all the toys.

Interesting Jim, even if events like that at SXSW could happen to anyone on any given night.

As you know, though, limited touring does go against the grain of how to earn a crust as a modern-day full-time musician, so it is interesting to note the references to teaching and studying.

That said, he is hardly the first introspective performer either to have found the going tough initially. Others have grown into it with time and hopefully he can too.

JD – that gig at SXSW was just a case of the wrong man in the wrong venue at the wrong time. I didn’t get to see him in Crawdaddy when he played this year so I don’t know how he went down there. And you’re right – limited touring is not a good idea in an era when the only way of making an income is to go on the road. Unless you’re Enya.

@24 Remember that he had a cold, so it was not the spine-tingler that I had been hoping for. High expectations probably dampened my impression of the show, as a result. But it was still quite good.
