    November 20, 2009 @ 5:51 am | by Jim Carroll

In The Ticket today, the Coen brothers talk about their new film A Serious Man, The XX mark the spot, we deconstruct the fine art of the encore and look at how Paranormal Activity became the the most profitable film ever at the world box-office.

In New Music, there are rounds of applause for The Middle East, Planet Parade, Muchuu, Sleigh Bells and David Ronan, plus there are Music News stories on the Galway Jazz Festival, the Bottlenote festival, the Trans Musicales festival in France and how we owe the PiL reunion to Country Life butter.

Album of the Week comes from Rihanna and there are also reviews of releases from Tom Waits, The Brothers Movement, Luke Haines, House of Cosy Cushions & Katie Kim, Efterklang & the Danish National Orchestra, Susan Boyle, Horslips, Dublin Gospel Choir, Harry Manx, Janet Jackson and many more. Plus Eoin Butler rounds up the singles and downloads in Shuffle.

New films for your viewing pleasure this week are A Serious Man, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Informant! and The first day of the rest of your life. Plus film news, the weekly movie quiz and Donald Clarke’s Screenwriter column.

The Ticket: putting on the ritz.

The OTR community noticeboard is now open for business. Plug and recommend away to your heart’s content, but remember to declare an interest where one should be declared. Please note that plugs are accepted on the whim of OTR and may be edited for length/clarity/common sense. Events with a commercial sponsor are really ads and will probably not be published in this slot. Have a rocking weekend, y’all.

Noise Not Music are proud to present Hair Police in their first ever Irish performance.

Hair Police are an American psychedelic noise rock band based out of Lexington, Kentucky who formed in 2001. The current line up is Mike Connelly (also plays with Wolf Eyes) on guitar, vocals, tapes , Robert Beatty on electronics, and Trevor Tremaine on drums, vocals & tapes (both also play with Burning Star Core).
They have released records through labels such as No Fun Productions, Troubleman Unlimited, Hanson Records, Gods of Tundra, Freedom From and Hospital Productions. Working with traditional rock instrumentation as well as electronics, tape manipulation, and oscillators, Hair Police builds demonic walls of sound for a result reminiscent of Throbbing Gristle, early Black Dice, and Wolf Eyes.

Do you believe in a thing called Blog? Take a chance on the scribblings at www.ralphmexico.wordpress.com.

Read reports on the recent walking of the Camino De Santiago which glory in such poptastic titles as “Blisters In The Sun”, “No Distance Left To Walk” and the Springsteen-inspired “So You’re Scared And You’re Thinking That Maybe The Camino Ain’t Fun Anymore”.

There’s also a truckload of gig reviews and various oddball musings. Does this give Blog a bad name? You decide at www.ralphmexico.wordpress.com.

Whether we like it or not, it’s that time of year again, and all week over at Ragged Words we’ve been making a list and checking it twice. That’s right, it’s our exhaustive trawl through the best 100 albums of the decade, as voted for by our team of writers:

    Jim & co,

I’m looking for help with a project - I’m planning to publish a once-off collection of essays, interviews, articles, photography and illustration on the theme of ‘the future of Dublin’ or ‘the future of urban Ireland’ sometime in the new year. Basically, I want to collect as many ideas as possible for creating culturally and socially vibrant cities and communities in one publication, and I’m confident I can round up enough new & experienced thinkers in this area to make it a success.

My current plan is to publish it as a print-on-demand book/magazine and hawk it at places like the Bernard Shaw, the flea market, and anywhere around town that will sell it. I also plan to publish it online in various formats, but may delay that a bit to help sell the print publication first.

All of the above is still up in the air and totally open to suggestions and ideas though - I really, really need people to get involved and help out in some way, so please do get in touch at thevillagegreen[at]gmail.com

I should of course stress that I won’t be making a penny out of this (I’ll most likely have to put some of my own cash in) and any help would be on a voluntary basis. If the project is a success I’d be tempted to make it a regular thing - perhaps an annual collection of ideas + illustration on a particular theme.

    Thanks for reading,

    Lenny

    Hi everybody.

We at AU Magazine are in the process of putting together a poll of the Top Irish Albums of the Decade for our December/January issue.

We’d love OTR readers (and Irish Times staff!) to contribute - just compile a list of UP TO 20 albums released since January 2000 by artists from anywhere in Ireland, and email it to me - chris@iheartau.com

The deadline for entries is THIS MONDAY, November 23. Any queries about eligibility, please email me.

The results will be out towards the end of the first week in December.

    Thanks all!

A lot of it is, the Grand Parade, Washington Street area was under a couple of feet from where the river had broken but the drains seemed to have worked in where it used to flood badly, like the Mall/ Oliver P. Street. It’s going be hairy again if they open the dam though.

Also the water supply is dead ‘cos the waterworks got flooded so now there’s no bottled water to be had anywhere.
