    Midlake, Dublin, February

    Jim Carroll

Midlake play Dublin’s Vicar Street on February 14. Tickets, at €23 a pop, go on sale on Friday. The band’s new album “The Courage Of Others”, the follow-up to the awesome “The Trials of Van Occupanther”, will be released on February 1 next. The band most likely to do a Grizzly Bear in ‘10? Love this remix.

I thought Grizzly Bear did a Midlake in ‘09…

”I thought Grizzly Bear did a Midlake in ‘09…”

True, was thinking that as well. Midlake were one of the most talked-about new American bands a couple years back, possibly getting more positive write-ups and reviews than Grizzly. ‘Trials…’ is one of the truly great albums of this decade.

I meant it in a jumping-over-to-a-bigger-audience way as in what GB have done this year. Surprised to see two of you think it should be the other way around. I know “Trials…” is a great record – and “Roscoe” is truly fantastic – but how did it sell?

Steady on with the fulsome praise lads. Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like a Fleetwood Mac B-Side.

mclovin’ – Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like a Fleetwood Mac B-Side.

from the press release about the new album “Just as that record was in part inspired by the soft(er) rock of the early-to-mid 1970s – from Neil Young and America to Fleetwood Mac”

Re: Fleetwood Mac – I think a lot of the press made the same link when “Trials of Van Occupanther” was released. I imagine this wouldn’t have helped its sales with the pitchfork crowd.

Don’t knock the Mac until you’ve heard “Tusk” though – had me thoroughly converted.

No, everyone thinks that – fans and detractors alike.

and the forkers did their usual “We preferred their first album…” routine at the time.

Midlake are in a different league to that of Grizzly Bear. True melody and variety – the latter of which cant be said of GB.
Trials … is an album you keep going back to. Tried getting into Veckatimest with no joy and while the gig was good it didnt exactly leave me calling out for more.

Anyone figure out what this Midlake presale lark is all about?

I much prefer Midlake to (what I’ve heard of) Grizzly Bear as well. While Veckatimest has 3 or 4 inspired moments (and Two Weeks is one of the songs of the year) a lot it sounds pretty but just washes over me. Much like (and I duck my head at this point) Merriweather Post Pavilion, in fact. The Trials… on the other hand, is coherent, consistent, full of heart and contains Roscoe, Head Home, Young Bride, In This Camp etc etc. I’m dying for a Belfast date.

Aaaaagghhh!! I am so excited about this! As we’d say in Cork – Yes, boy. Cannot wait to hear the new album, am hearing it is even better than Van O…if that is even possible?!
