D.I.S.C.O.

They are called The Golden Filter and, boy, do they want to be mysterious. While most acts sell themselves like Irish politicans in cheap suits at a funeral with around-the-clock MySpace blogs, Twitter updates and whinges about the state of their skin, the Filter prefer to remain above all of that carry-on.

First names (Penelope and Stephen), location (New York) and, uhm, that’s it. They want you to listen to the music and make your own mind up without knowing anything about them. They don’t want you to go about the fact that Penelope is an Aussie and ex-flight attendant. Or that Stephen lived next door to her in New York and they first bonded over film-making and photography (they’re really into their visuals, as you can see from their website). Right now, it’s all about the music.

Well, OK, the music…..

“Thunderbird” is a thumping good slice of disco-pop pie. You can spot the spirits of Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer and Nile Rodgers in the middle of its groove. Like previous single “Solid Gold”, it’s the kind of tune which makes you feel like putting your hands in the air, closing your eyes and getting transported to another dimension full of mirrorballs, glitter and neon. Up, up and away

Live, having seen them at SXSW back in March, we know they’ve also got it going on and, despite all the mystery, they don’t have two heads apiece. They’re doing a shed load of UK shows this week and are back in Europe in November so, Irish promoters, get on the phone.
