Joe - problem is - and this is the only problem for me with Spotify - is that it’s not so hot on new music. A lot of the Far Side’s playlist is new or to-be-released music and so it is not yet on Spotify. For instance, I can find only about 40% of the first hour from last night’s show on Spotify.

That said, an OTR Spotify playlist in definitely near the top of the to-do list

As a matter of interest, how many Spotify fans do we have here?

You don’t actually need to be in the UK to use Spotify, you just need the UK IP address to sign up for an account.

If you don’t want to go down the proxy route you can just get a friend in the UK, France, Spain etc. to sign up for you and send you a username and password. After that you can login, download and use Spotify for free.

Can’t be arsed with Spotify but some tasty morsels on that playlist - Moderat’s album is wonderful (they’re playing the Picnic!) - Yeah, Bibio’s album deserves wider attention… Downloaded Jonsi and Alex album a few days ago - lovely, lovely, sublime stuff - think a whole album of Sigur Ros’ quieter, more ambient moments.

An OTR spotify would go down a treat. Fantastic work Jim. Been raving about spotify to friends for weeks now. It will certainly reduce the amount of illegal downloading and put money back in the pockets of the musicians. Be interesting to see how long more we can access spotify via the ‘free’ route. I’d definetly subscribe once it comes online in Ireland.

Cathal - have you not tried using a proxy UK server and then changing your location to Canada?

Missed the last half of the show so great that I can get some of the tunes on the Spotify playlist- been using it the last couple of weeks and spreading the word!

Some great artists up there but found the same problem when trying to do a copy of a muxtape I had done with only half of them there. I would imagine that when they release it in the States the catalogue will probably increase substantially and they will hopefully get rid of some of the country restrictions since not all the artists are available for all countries at the moment- up to the whatever the labels say I am sure!

Great to hear that Dark Captain Light Captain tune again- first heard Questions (The Chicken Feed Remix) over at Eardrums (same one that Niall mentioned above @33) Busy dude since he has his regular blog- his label for his compilations and now On The Spot…oh and Twitter. Always worth checking out his compilations since there are so many new groups on there.

@30 No ads just yet but am sure that will change when the free version is officially available here. Heard of somebody with the free version taking their laptop up North and they were getting the ads there but stopped as soon as they came south again.

Spotify app for iphone/ipod touch has been submitted to Apple for approval.

    http://www.spotify.com/blog/archives/2009/07/27/spotify-for-iphone/

Scenario: Legally sync up The Far Side playlist when connected to WLAN and then head off on your travels happily listening to the tunes offline.

I’ll certainly be paying the tenner a month once this is available. Conscience free music downloading beckons.

@47 The paid version of Spotify has been available for a while but the free version hasn’t…there is a way around it though and that is what people are referring to.

The Spotify app for the iPhone hasn’t been approved yet and in light of their rejection of the Google Voice app then it will be interesting to see which way it goes. No links to iTunes and with offline function then why would you want to buy the tunes anyway? As @43 said you have to have the paid version of Spotify….blocked from his link but details also here:

I agree Spotify’s lacking an awful lot of new music but am hoping record labels will pay attention to the jump and start getting their artists up there, as Joss has hinted. If all the Indies switched on to this idea, it really could be a barnstormer.
Wish they’d add a ‘love’ feature to complement the last.fm scrobbles tho.

recently i’ve been filling in the gaps that i have noticed in spotify’s selection of music by visiting http://www.grooveshark.com

it’s not as user friendly or aesthetically appealing, but i’ve found it in many instances to have a far more varied and obscure catalogue of tracks.

the site was recommended to me a couple of weeks ago and i haven’t looked back!
