Banter is a new monthly-ish series of informal chats, debates and discussions around pop and pop culture.

The first one takes place tomorrow (Saturday July 4, 9pm) in the Mezz room in the Twisted Pepper (Middle Abbey Street, Dublin 1) and will look at “the state of Irish music radio - past, present and future”.

The speakers: Paul McLoone (Today FM) and The Golden Maverick (Power FM). The eejit keeping it all together: er, me.

Admission is free but capacity is limited so to guarantee your place, please email your name to conor@bodytonicmusic.com with ‘Banter No1′ in the subject bar.

Early stages of planning, but I’m organising ‘No Pix Tix?’ - the 20th anniversary Pixies Pity Party and Protest on Dame Street for those without Pixies tickets, again.

The anniversary will be on the actual date (Oct 1) of the day we hung around the National Stadium or maybe the Friday, possibly in Brogan’s right beside the Olympia. Tickets will be free, not captha-protected, and a maximum of nonexistent four-per-punter. Possible sponsorship by a brewing company - I’m thinking bitter. Guest speakers to include Joe Duffy (I’m on hold with him right now), and the activities will mostly consist of scowling at the guestlisters, friends-of-promoters, the faster-fingered, and the recession-proof eBay credit card profligates. Dress code: Death to the Pixies teeshirt, scuffed shoes for kerb-kicking, and a miserable scowl.

How about a piece on rip off ticket prices in Ireland.Pixies tickets for the Olympia are a whopping 55 euro whereas tickets for their Glasgow SECC gig are £30 which is around 35 euro.

What is the justification for this?

I doubt Pixes are playing the Olympia because the promoter doesn’t think they’d fill the O2.

I reckon the band want to play small venues on this Doolittle tour. Just like Bowie on his Earthling tour in 1997.

Goin on this mornings eperience, they’d fill the the O2 both nights no problem

The sat is still free in their schedule although listed as a night off…if I was MCD i’d be on to them this morning saying, how bout doin the Sat too ? Nights off are for wimps ! :-)

I’d like to make a quick comment on the Gary Lightbody-edited issue of the Ticket today. Namely that in his “new music” picks, he selects Miracle Fortress. In what sense does he think they are “new” music, since I’ve had their album for about two years?

It’s a small point, of course, but I have nothing else to whinge about today so far, apart from Utd signing Michael Owen, but I’ll not “go there”

Mully - I was thinking the same thing myself. It’s been a long time since I have seen a gig marked ‘tickets are currently unavailable’. The fact that they let you enter a number of tickets before telling you that there are no tickets available means that they’d have a decent idea of the level of interest in extra dates.

I got my ticket in sound cellar on the friday morning. It was so refreshing (and reminiscent of my younger ticket-buying days) to stand in a line on a sunny morning with a coffee, reading the ticket and shooting the breeze with the assorted pixies/beyoncé fans on nassau street. something nostalgic about it, that along with the friendly banter of the guy who works there reminded me how soulless buying tickets has become in the “if you’re not F5′ing it in the first 2 seconds, you’re done” era of ticketmaster dominated ticket sales.

I’ll be heading back there to buy all my tickets, that’s for sure.

Also, point of interest, don’t know if everyone knows this but if you’re buying tickets for whelans gigs, stay away from ticketmaster and ring up whelans ticket line directly, the credit card booking fee is only something like 45cents per ticket compared to the TM’s rather more extortionate fees, sweet !

Also, á propos of nothing much in particular, has anyone heard that dangermouse/sparklehorse album, dark night of the soul, it’s excellent, hasn’t been off my Ipod for the past few weeks !
