    On The Polls

    Jim Carroll

In case it has escaped your attention, there are a couple of election campaigns underway. I know, the excitement is really gripping the nation as we decide who will represent us in Europe and on our local councils. Meanwhile, voters in Dublin Central and Dublin South probably can’t sleep at night thanks to the added bonus of deciding on a new TD to rep them in the Dail.

Some of you may well agree with Nighty Night that it’s all a waste of time. Many more of you will go along with Deaglan’s view that the current line-ups prove we need new blood. And plenty of you, especially those who regard elections as their favourite blood-sport outside of ice-hockey, coursing and/or junior hurling, relish the thought of all these lads and lasses wearing out shoe-leather looking for your vote and making eejits of themselves in the process. As you may have guessed, On The Record falls into the latter category.

With that in mind, and prompted by the reaction to yesterday’s post (including not one, but two sightings of The Bert hobbling his way from door to door looking for votes), it’s On The Polls. All election-related goings on and observations are welcome here, from tales of what Small Logo Party are up to in your ‘hood to posters going bump in the night. The more ludicrous the better. Question: whatever happen to Royston Brady?

Here’s a ludicrous one for ya – Small Logo party erects posters of its Euro Candidates in Fermoy Co Cork despite the town having a ban on the things on anti-litter grounds.

Small Logo Party’s response when asked? Sabotage and ‘dirty tricks’ from rivals trying to make them look bad. No wonder Fine Gael and CO cant make inroads when they’re busy putting up Fianna Fail posters.

Ah Royston! We need a man of his calibre and conviction in these torrid times. His brother, the Cypriot Brady, has been conspicuous by his absence since his election in Dublin Central in 07. Maybe he’s on a sabbatical from politics whilst acting as Bertie’s primary care giver.

Joe – Priceless, fecking priceless. I wonder do they have to call some PR guru/spin-doctor to come up with yarns like that?

Matt – Cyprian is probably doing his level best for the 939 people who voted for him in ‘07

Ah, there she is – http://www.finegael.ie/representatives/lea/index.cfm/type/person/pkkey/1092/pkey/655/ikey/10

At least, she has some election/voting experience after that Popstars TV show

Any sign of posters from John “Wolfman” Foley this time around in the Offaly area? I recall him getting slagged by The Panel last time for his big-hair and beard combo. That was prior to his infamous fall on the RTÉ News.

MDR – it was Callely Jr who kicked this whole thing off yesterday. His posters round OTR’s hood are hillarious – the Facebook logo on them are bigger than those of Small Logo Party. Love the photos of him gurning on Dollymount Strand and the fact that he is calling for CHANGE. Even (minor) political dynasties are all for change this weather

the only voting worth talking about is the travesty that took place in Moscow last night where the Belarussian Blond Bond-Theme Singing dude didn’t make the Eurovision final..

My vote is now destined for Romania’s Balkan Girls – apparently they like to party.

Everytime I see a poster for Catherine Noone of Fine Gael, I can only see Catherine No One, which makes me feel kind of sad.

That said, it did give me a new idea for the character ‘Captain No One’ in my upcoming puppet show.

As far as I know yes.

Another quirky character going for election on the FG ticket is photographer/NUJ Chapel Chair and part-time gumshoe Billy macGill. There’s rarely a gig goes by in Cork where Billy isn’t snapping.

I’m sure hoarding these posters will pay off in the eco-future…garden fence cladding with half a dozen cheesy smiles should keep the birds away.

It’s really important people use their local election votes, especially on our D3 flipside. Sadly, most people I know don’t give a shit.

the name ‘Small Logo Party’ is brilliant.

as a politics student up until just after midday today, I should be able to add more than that, but I’m not.

best poster I’ve seen so far is mini-Tubs from Pembroke-Rathmines (Garrett Tubridy, for the SLP, natch). as if we needed any more branch dynasties…

There’s an independent running in Dublin South called Ross Mullane.
Says you wont be seeing any posters from him or canvassing. He his trying a different approach to the tradtional methods of democracy and electioneering.

Im surprised that’s the first mention of Tubridy Jr. Just went onto his website to confirm that he was who I expected he was and sure enough he was. I also went on to confirm that he is an independent because there didn’t appear to a party logo on the poster. As you would expect he is a Small Logo Party candidate who must have the smallest Small Logo Party logo of all.

Speaking of vampires, I’m particularly terrified of Richard Humphreys – http://richardhumphreys.ie/

Strolling home last night I spotted a poster for for a Kenneth “I’m Noel O’Flynn’s son don’t-you-know” O’Flynn.

Not only in the FF logo rather small, there seems to be a move away from the traditional FF colour scheme.

It find it strange that the FF candidates are so desperately trying to distance themselves from their party. Sure according to this letter sent out to people running they “have nothing to be ashamed of” …

“Comment on the media” but probably best to make sure first of all that the person you are talking to doesn’t actually work in The Media.

“With the All-Ireland championships starting in May” probably won’t really work too well in Leitrim (or Clare, tbh)
