  • Tune of the Week - “Lips”

    January 30, 2009 @ 12:05 pm | by Jim Carroll

    Oooooooooh, this is good

Every year, there are always a couple of acts who I should have seen at Eurosonic that I only find out about afterwards. This year’s one that got away was Micachu & The Shapes. Chances are that will be the last time they get away in 2009.

Micachu is Mica Levi, a 21 year from Bow in east London. She’s already done the classical stuff - including writing a piece for the London Philharmonic Orchestra to perform - and she’s now turning her attention to wonky pop. And man, Micachu and her band The Shapes know all about gloriously lo-fi wonky pop. This is music making friends with sounds which should never even be on kissing terms making for a criss-crossed, insideout, mixed-up and weird-as-hell soundclash with an abundance of swagger and smarts.

There has been a couple of singles already (you can hear “Golden Hammer” here and you can get “Lone Ranger” via eMusic). More importantly, she has an album called “Jewellery”, which was produced by Matthew Herbert and which will feature “Lips”, ready to roll on Rough Trade. She’s probably the best signing that label has made in yonks and more than makes up for them signing crud like The 1990s. I had a listen to an unmastered version of the new album earlier in the week and those off-kilter sounds, weird melodies and chunks of unglossy pop fun are still exploding in my head. It’s going to be one of the albums which will wow you this year.

Listen to “Lips” here, download LV’s Hyperdubesque remix of the tune here and download Micachu’s “Filthy Friends” mix-tape here.

    Hella Yeah - Great album.
Turn Me Well” is an awesome tune - The intro with the sound of the drill is catchy as hell.
The great Billy Lyons brought in a couple of her 7″s back in July 08 and we have been in love ever since.

Sweet - yep, good interview alright - http://www.planbmag.com/

Pedro - The album is truly savage - do u know if there’s a firm release date for it yet? And kudos to Rough Trade - a good signing for them and gets rids of the bad taste of the Libertines

petee - have heard one or two tracks from it so far which I have liked - played the one from it which seemed to have every rapper in the business (and Lykee Li and Santogold) on it on the radio a few weeks ago
