    Oasis, Slane Castle, summer 2009

    Jim Carroll

Best review of the new Oasis album so far? Kitty Empire in the Observer yesterday: “their least worst outing in recent memory”.

Anyway, Noel, Liam and the other members of the world’s favourite meat-and-two-veg rock band will be playing in Co Meath next summer. Remember where you read it first etc when it is announced on Wednesday.

UPDATE: Yes, we were right (again). Oasis play Slane Castle on June 20 next. Tickets go on sale on Friday October 24. Interestingly, prices have not been announced – the calculators must be broken.

Not terribly surprising, a fairly safe choice for it.

I predict loud nostalgic sing-a-longs, polite applause for stuff off the new album, and an anthemic finale. See also: every Oasis gig for the last 11 years.

    matt – can they count?

joe – they could always just show a DVD

dealga – REM have been going downhill since their first rehearsal

Peter81 – That quote is from a live review in the Review not the music mag. And yeah, Observer Music Monthly are fond of giving everything a 4 or 5 star review, which may is one reason why the mag is nowhere as good as it could – and should – be.

Aside from the over-jolly reviews, I think its a good magazine. They do articles that you really wouldn’t find anywhere else – like music being produced from soldiers in Iraq or musical priests! And I like the giblets like “soundtrack of my life”, Miranda and Morley etc.

Out of curiosity what’s the consensus here on Allmusic.com? It’s always been by music bible, probably because I seem to agree with most of its opinions, but maybe it hands out high scores too liberally?

I’ve always admired the way it sort of ignores what’s trendy or cool and evaluates purely on the merit of the music, unlike say Pitchfork, which admittedly is hilarious.

Is it true that Noel Gallagher said Oasis were playing Slane when he was interviewed by Phantom FM the other week and the station was then asked to edit this out so the gig could be properly “announced”? If true, good to see Phantom care more about their co-owners (MCD) than their dwindling listenership

Not really, more to do with the fact that there are probably in excess of 1,000 albums released every month and there is finite space to review them all, As much as it is easy – and occasionally joyous – to write a scathing review, reviewers usually end up writing about albums they actually like, hence why you get so many 4 and 5 stars fluttering around like discarded betting dockets.

Ally – yes, an individual may only have a handful of 5 star album reviews in one year but when you’re dealing with a number of different reviewers writing for the one publication, the number does seem more than it should be. That said, I’ve always thought OMM’s reviews are the weakest element of the magazine.

If I was King, 5 star status would be reserved for those “once every few years albums”, that way when you see an album that got 5 stars you spit out your coffee in that cartoony way and leave a dust trail as you leg it down to the music shop.

As it is, “5 star” albums have lost all value as the reader demands two or three a month. But its all subjective. At the end of the day, album reviews are only nudges in the right direction, its your own opinion that matters.

I notice a few of the American magazines use grades for albums. I think this would be easier to have a more consistent opinion across the board. We grow up knowing the value of A – D so it would be easier to apply.

To insider trader in 19, I am glad I am not relying you for inside tips on the stock market or music news.

Let me correct you on a few things. Phantom 105.2 is Dublin’s only independently owned and operated radio station and you are incorrect to say that it is owned or co-owned by MCD. MCD are a client of the station and we are delighted to do business with them on a daily basis.

The interview with Noel Gallagher was arranged through the bands record company – not through any concert promoter – to promote the new album- and all editing of the interview was at the discretion of the interviwer. We of course respect anything that the artist may state in the course of an interview as “off the record”.

It’s actually an excellent interview and I recommend you give it a listen. It’s on our award winning web site phantom.ie

So the answer to your question is that it isn’t true..

Brian Daly – you obviously don’t know who you work for in that case. One of the main shareholders and directors of Phantom FM is Denis Desmond, the current owner of MCD Concerts. Stop trying to be smart – it does not suit you.

As regards on or off the record – are you telling me that if an interviewee says something really interesting on the record – like that his act are playing at Slane in 2009 – and then realises he shouldn’t have said it, that you will edit it out? As I said in my original post, good to see that Phantom FM have an unique definition of giving their audience what they want.

Spandex/Insider Trading – I’m sure Jim Carroll will be happy to enlighten you on the dos and don’t of journalistic interviews. I also suggest that you read my post again. As I said the interview with Noel Gallagher was arranged by their record company to promote the new album and not by any concert promoter. If you listen to the interview you will note that he alludes to a date at a major out door venue outside Dublin. You can draw your own conclusions at where it may be.

Insider Trading – Suggest that you take a read of our application or take a trip to the Companies office to ascertain who the shareholders are. You stated wrongly as a matter of fact that MCD are a co-owner of Phantom.

Brian – In all fairness, you are being a little disingenuous with your information on shareholders. Denis Desmond owns and runs MCD Concerts and he is also one of the shareholders of the company who run Phantom FM. While MCD may not “own” or “co-own” the station, both entities do have a shareholder in common, hence what Insider Trading is getting at (I think).

As for on the record/off the record intv with Oasis, as nerraw says, molehills and mountains. The interview gave it away without saying the S word so, as Brian puts it, you really just had to read between the lines. I dont see what Insider Trading is getting at here.

Usually around the end of August isn’t it? Oasis can certainly still cut it as a live act and they’re gonna be better than rubbish like Sterophonics, Madonna or the Chilli Peppers, even the Rolling Stones were disappointing a couple of years back. Reckon this one could be a cracker and they’ll likely have a decent set of support acts too.

“Eileen Battersby is able to write good book reviews in the Irish Times without using stars, so it can be done.”

In fairness, Eileen Battersby gets a much higher word-count to fully get across her views on a new novel without needing to resort to a rating system (which has traditionally been seen as a big no-no in the world of “serious” literary reviewing in any case, rightly or wrongly).

In the case of a 200-word (or whatever) record review, it’s a much more difficult thing to fully get across a rounded impression of an album, hence the rating system is (in theory) a useful additional guide. But certainly, many many publications could do with recalibrating their rating systems, so that five stars means something along the lines of “this, in my opinion, is a classic, or at least potential classic”. These days, it so often seems to just mean “this is the best album I’ve heard in a few weeks”.

But anyway, treating reviews as some sort of reliable consumer guide is sure to end you up with a big-pile-of-shite record collection. It might even include Dig Out Your Soul. Caveat emptor

    Greetings all,

As the lucky man who got to interview Noely G I’d be happy to give you a transcript of the ‘S’ word conversation with Noel.

Long story short though, he’d already given enough away, I asked if he could confirm to me off the record what this big gig was and he said, “well, if it’s off the record…..we’re playing the castle”, but insisted I leave it out as he’d get – as he put it – “a bollocking” off someone if it broke early because he said licences etc weren’t confirmed.

Now, we could all be mistaken and the lads could end up doing summer season in Clontarf Castle, but there ya have it, from both horses mouths as it were.

Hope that clears everything up and we can stop all this fussin’ and a fuedin’

Ok i’ve read through these comments and people are very critical. It isn’t easy to follow up two of the best albums of all time so maybe thats why everyone has been so cricitcal of Oasis over the past 10 years since Be Here Now(which was poor but as Noel admits drug fuelled drivle). I have been a fan for years and where I’ll admit that their offerings since Definately Maybe and Whats the Story have met the original bar set they haven’t always been been as bad as people make out. It seems many people(and some have commented here) don’t like Oasis cos it’s ‘cool’ not to! Last 3 ablums have been quite good and the latest itsn’t bad at all, different but grows on you very much. I look forward to seeing them in Belfast in 3 weeks. They are one of the best live acts in the world and i’m a very big music fan and attend many concerts! It’s not just throwing out the hits, mainly because they couldn’t fit them all in an hour and a half show.
So those begrudgers and critics just listen to the music and enjoy! Don’t just jump on the anti-Oasis band wagon, like sad comments like that of Matt Vinyl ‘As if Oasis fans could read’……thrust me I and many other Oasis fans are well capable of reading, its you I worry about mate!

It reckons that Oasis were touring “What’s The Story…” when they supported R.E.M. in ‘95. They were not, though they did play a lot of the album at the gig. Don’t just jump on the anti-Oasis band wagon, like sad comments like that of Matt Vinyl ‘As if Oasis fans could read’……thrust me I and many other Oasis fans are well capable of reading.

@Murt – Shouldn’t that read ‘trust’ instead of ‘thrust’? I stand corrected and take it all back. Oasis fans can read, it’s just the spelling they have problems with.

On a more serious note, I think you doth protest too much. I happen to think that Oasis are a pile of poo. I also happen to think that the two albums you describe as ‘two of the best of all time’ are at best, not even mediocre. I’ve followed their career since it began and although I got a buzz out of the collective antics of the Gallagher brothers I soon got tired of their three chord tricks. Liking music is usually subjective. You like Oasis. That’s your prerogative. I, on the other hand, think they’re crap. I have a penchant for eighties synth-pop music and stuff by brass bands. Other people think that stuff is shite. They’re welcome to think that. Different strokes for different folks and all that. If we all liked the same stuff the world would be full of music automatons.

This blog has what’s called a ‘Comments’ box at the end of each post. If you feel like commenting on a post you’re invited to do so. It doesn’t say that the comments posted must be positive towards the band under discussion. If you want to meet similar minded Oasis lovers I’m sure that they have an online forum where you can discuss just how brilliant those first two albums were. Thankfully this blogs owner thinks that variety is the spice of life and he very nicely allows my sometimes inane comments to be included here. On a personal level I don’t moderate comments on my site so come on over and spew some vitriol there, it would bump my stats up no end.

Well.. I dont know about all the rest of you, but me and the people I’m going with can not f**king WAIT! I’ve always wanted to go see a gig in Slane, who better than Oasis? They may get alot of criticism, but they put on an amazing show, you can’t deny that! Liam Gallagher is a legend..

It’s so funny to see all these really snobby people who for some reason think they’re above Oasis fans. ‘As if Oasis fans can read’ said one of yis. And I BET he was a Southsider. Snobby fool. Get over your superiority issues and dig a really great band. ‘Nuff said on the topic. I will be thoroughly be enjoying my self… Fuckin’ in the bushes.

It’s actually “can’t” Christopher but not to worry (my dear!) Any one got any idea when Arctic Monkeys will confirm a date at Marlay Park to complete the absolute perfect Summer of gigs? Oasis, Blur, Coldplay… What a time to be 19!

New album out in the Summer with an Arctic Monekys edition of NME coming out next week. That gig announcement has to be coming very soon (if it’s to come at all).

I am closing this thread because (1) gig is over (2) all the action is now on Joe Duffy (3) this thread has gone on far too long, (4) I’m really bored of having to deal with comments every week from Oasis muppets, sorry, fans and (5) oasis are a terrible, terrible band.
