    Fionn Regan, Dublin, November

    Jim Carroll

One-off gig from Fionn Regan to mark Vicar Street’s 10th birthday. He should be playing tunes from his new album (due in 2009) at the venue on November 28. Tickets, at a recession-busting €19 a pop, go on sale on Monday.

Have you heard the new demo called protection racket on his myspace? It’s nothing like his old stuff. Electric Guitar and full band behind him. Wonder if he’ll be playing this new stuff in November…

I know you’re always going to have this argument but I think he should have won the 2007 Choice. Well there’s always next year if he sneaks an album out soon…

Bren – I agree but that’s the way these things go. Those judges prefered the Divine Comedy so what do I know?

Great great debut album-thanks for posting this-will definitely be going to vicar street.

Vicar street seem to have gotten some great acts for their anniversary-great venue for music and comedy-probably best in ireland

Cannot wait for this gig, seems like so long ago he played whelans. I think theres going to be a lot bickering over the electric sound on protection racket, however he had another song ms. flynn on his myspace for a day or so which is amazing!

Any idea when the rest of the Vicar Street birthday lineup will be announced? Ben Folds has the 26th and 27th marked on his tour schedule but the dates are unconfirmed by Aiken as yet… wonder if it’s part of the same event.

I hope he crashes and burns.

Turns up to do a gig in a small room in Cork, then proceeds to dispense with all amplification for a number of songs. Pretentious git.

May I quote from his Sunday Times interview…

‘Here he is on why it took him so long to make the album (he released his first two EPs four years ago; The End of History finally surfaced last July): “Let’s say that I was doing things by committee, you know? And that had to fizzle out in order for me to be able to move to the next station.

I arrived at a station where I thought, ‘I’m here now, what I’ve got to do is build the ocean liner with a butter knife.’ And that takes a lot of time when you haven’t got the power tools or the crew. So everybody’s going, ‘What’s he doing? He’s going into the harbour again to work on the boat.’ And now it’s like we’ve left the harbour, and it seems to be floating okay.”

A pause, for breath. “I wanted it (the album) to be like the conversations that I have,” he continues, “the things I think about, that I sit around tables like this and talk about. I don’t want to have to go off the country road onto the superhighway. Because maybe I’m riding a Honda 50 and I’m not allowed on the motorway anyway.”’

Private Eye could close down both their Luvvies column and ‘Pseuds Corner’ with that wank.

Dealga ! You leave ‘im alone! Er I’ll bunt you in the snout with a ton of confused stars, he’s an artist he dont’ look back an he’s trying & he has a soul, he’s inspired. Now when he loses that glimmering stray I won’t be meddling or bothering.. Look inside yerself a bit wontcha?? You loony lychee twit.
