On The Record

  • The annual On The Record outdoor shows and festivals census

    August 6, 2008 @ 12:06 pm | by Jim Carroll

We did this last year with huge help from Nialler and Pedro so it’s time to do it again.

The aim is simple - to keep track of all the outdoor summer shows and festivals (or shows in tents - no solid structures please) which take place in Ireland every “summer” from April/May to September.

The list is blow the fold and the count now stands at 74.

Add any ones I’ve left out in the comments and I’ll update the list as they come in.

Jim, is Tennents Vital not on in Belfast this year?

Also Belfast-related, Flaming Lips are playing outdoors on Monday 11 August supported by Jape, Oppenheimer and Mogwai (is it part of that Belsonic thing?)

And I believe there were some outdoor events as part of the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival which was a few months ago - May, June maybe? I know The Fall played in a tent and probably a few more.

Shite, I forgot about that and its a mate of mine who’s putting it on. I reckon I’ll go to that. The weather is bound to be good once the kids are back at school.

On a related tip, did anyone see that ‘Silver Surfari’ documentary on RTE last night. It followed the original Irish surfers up the west coast of Ireland ending in Bundoran and Rossnowlagh. Great craic.

Saw the surfer programme last night. What a great bunch of (relatively) auld fellas. Some nice comments from the kids in Rossnowlagh thinking that they were in their 80s. It was a great route that they took. Some nice breaks along the way. The mixing of the old footage and the new worked very well- seems to be the same waves on the go.

nerraw - I’ll leaving out the classical stuff. There’s dozens and dozens of outdoor classical gigs - there was a report on Morning Ireland earlier about one of them which happens today in the park behind the council offices on Wood Quay - so lets stick with rock/pop/etc for now.

Yeah every Thursday afternoon there is free opera at Wood Quay!! Opera in the Open starting today. I dind’t think to include it as it’s more of a series than a festival even though it’s outdoors…

Talking of outdoor gigs, I am really dumbfounded by the lack of hubbub surrounding the Flaming Lips show in Belfast next week. The promoters really have done them a dis-service.

I can appreciate that the band are pretty much between albums, nothing to promote and playing one-off shows at the moment but there has been zero fanfare for what should be a great gig (every lips gig is great).

Am I the only one making the trek up north (well apart from me missus and two of our friends)? More importantly who do I need to bribe to get on stage with them as a Santa?
