The more you hear it, the more you dig it.

Anita Blay is Thecocknbullkid. That’s Thecocknbullkid with no spaces or punctuation or commas or any of that aul’ stuff. She’s a sassy east London singer, songwriter and all-round performer who thankfully did not go to any of their schools where they turn wayward, interesting talents into TV talent show fodder. At least, I don’t think she did.

“On My Own” is her debut single and it’s a keeper. It doesn’t sound like much when it starts out, but it soon snares you as it twists and turns and keeps you wondering just what the hell is going to come next. It’s the best slow, mesmerising and downlow funky oddball you’ll hear this month.

Blay took care of the vocals and the words, Joe Mount from Metronomy did all the electronics. Funny that; I’m a huge fan of various Metromony remixes and collaborations, but their own stuff is a little meh.

Thecocknbullkid is, naturally, getting all sorts of stupid press-puke at the moment – “a cross between Neneh Cherry and Morrissey”, “the best thing to come out of London since the Klaxons” – but don’t let that put you off. Here’s the video for “On My Own”. You can check her out live when she plays Club NME at Dublin’s Button Factory on August 21).
