hmm, wonder why there’s still no offical announcement. Also why Elbow aren’t on that list, they’re listed on their my space page.

Santogold and Hercules & Love Affair (even without Anthony) could be really good - both albums are strong.

And the new Cut Copy record is excellent.

And Gemma Hayes, Gomez, Congos are decent additions.

The whole Portishead thang isn’t goin to happen then eh?

Ho-hum. Still need some big name acts but are there any left? Portishead WON’T be there, they’ve recently announced their tour is over. They hate touring. Gemma Hayes on the line-up has been common knowledge for the last few months. Still a shit line-up all in all, apart from MBV, Wilco, Sigur Ros of course.

Glad to see SEBP and Gemma Hayes there. But the festival needs at least one more big hitter.

Portishead are out apparently. Daft Punk aren’t touring right now. It’s hard to see which big names they can get who aren’t already playing here this summer.

Having said all that, although they might not be headliners, there are some great bands playing there . Also, it’s a festival so we’ll make our own fun and you never know what gems you’ll stumble upon away from the main stages.

Sammy @ 36 - what Cormac @ 40 and markg @ 44 said. Sometimes I do get the info before anyone else - like http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/ontherecord/2008/06/11/houston-we-have-a-problem-another-gig-cancellation/ - and sometimes, I just happen to be faster with the cut and paste. In this case, it was the latter.

I think the big problem with the Picnic line-up is that it is so ‘new artists’ heavy. At it stands, I’d say that about 90% of the line-up is new or un-established acts.

While I appreciate hearing new music and am conscious that it is always used to pad out festival schedules, I think that the picnic line-up is top heavy with them.

New music needs to be consumed in small doses.

Personally I wouldn’t mind a little more ’safety net’ bands, acts that I’d be familiar with their toons but might not normally go to if they were headlining.

It’s very hard to get excited about bands that have two EPs out (neither of which I’ve heard coz I can’t get them anywhere), get a bit of hype via the NME, and are sporting drain pipe kecks (kiss of death in my book) in their publicity shots and/or been mentioned as being liked by Beth Tit-to or smilin Pete Doherty.

If I wanted to be part of the ‘hip’ London scene, I’d live there.

@Bren are modeselektor not playing? They may be not a big dance act, but the fact that they and Lindstrom are both playing Bodytonic suddenly makes the picnic worthwhile to me. Those two acts are all the dance I’ll need. And Cut Copy are going to be pretty fucking sweet too, satisfying both the dance monkeys and the indie kids in the best possible way.

It’s not so much the big-hitter element that irritates me – Wilco, MBV & Sigur Ros. It’s just that the choice of smaller acts appears lazy (lots of jaded British indie acts). In my opinion (and most others I know) the North American indie scene is streets ahead of Europe at the moment yet there doesn’t appear to be any decent new acts on this list. Granted most of them have played or will be playing in Dublin over the course of the summer but I can’t understand how this year’s list is so shambolically bare compared to the previous two years.

97% of the line up consists of bands that play small one day inexpensive festivals in europe because they would never get bookings for a big festival. But us gobsheen irish willingly pay obsene amounts to promoters to see them because now this festival is ‘cool’
