To be honest, the shorthand on this one was not great. The “she” is an actress called Zooey Deschanel and the “him” is Portland singer-songwriter M Ward. Actors or actresses making music has never been a great idea (and indeed, pop stars trying their hand at acting – hello Goldie! – is also a bad idea), while M Ward’s music has never quite done anything for me.

But She & Him? Man, that’s another script altogether. Their debut album, “Volume One”, is all old-school pop, folk and country, an album full of sweetly understated drama, lovingly embellished melodies, Deschanel’s gorgeous voice and Ward’s magnificent, simple and subtle arrangements. “Sentimental Heart” is the track which sets the whole game in motion and it will wow you over to its side before you know what is going on.

Here’s a video of She & Him performing “Sentimental Heart” at this years South By Southwest fest
