Phantom 105.2 playlist, Saturday December 15
Jim Carroll
As played on Phantom 105.2, Saturday December 15, 10pm-midnight
This was the first half of the show’s review of 2007 and the second part will air on Saturday December 29. Next week, seeing as it will be (nearly) the eve of Christmas Eve, I’m planning two hours of alternative Xmas music to go with eating mince pies and slurping mulled wine. I’ve already got the likes of Cocteau Twins, Joni Mitchell, Bruce, Wild Billy Childish, The Knife, Badly Drawn Boy, Low, Palace Music, Tom Waits, St Etienne, Bright Eyes, “A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector”, the Blind Boys Of Alabama and a few more in the bag. Anything else you think I should play on the (nearly) eve of Christmas Eve show?

Christmas Isn’t Safe For Animals / Of Montreal
Christmas Makes Me Blue / Simone White
I Was Thinking I Would Clean Up For Christmas / Aimee Mann
No Christmas While I Am Talking / The Walkmen
Or for something really alternative…
Shake Your Donkey Up / XTC
Songs from Sufjan’s Christmas box-set. And there’s a nice Big Star song with a chorus of ‘Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day’ (it’s called either ‘Jesus Christ’ or ‘Christmas Day’. Or maybe ‘Was Born On’, to cover all possibilities.)
Jim – thanks, i’ll check those out, especially Animal Collective
Aidan – yes, that box-set is (somewhere) in the house.
Theres a Flaming Lips Xmas song too, isn’t there?
no xmas for john quays – the fall
or something a bit lighter the wedding present covering step into christmas..
for review of the year delorentos and fight like apes.
There’s a Beach Boys Christmas song I love, I think it’s called “Morning Christmas”. Dennis Wilson sings lead vocals on it.
Aquarium-drunkard reminded me of a great one over the weekend: Purple Snowflakes -Marvin Gaye. A Motown gem. James Browns ‘Let’s Make Christmas Mean Something This Year’ is another cracker (ahem)
I know Low are on the list but “Little Drummer Boy” would be the one to play.
Loud and Heavy? “Happy Christmas Fritz” by Billy Childish which deals with the English-German WW1 “in the trenches” football match with his usual sensitivity and good cheer.
Wild Billy Childish may be featuring a lot on Saturday – http://damagedgoods.greedbag.com/buy/christmas-8/?tab=description
AC/DC’s Mistress For Christmas from The Razor’s Edge album.
Jesse Malin’s Xmas from The Fine Art of Self Destruction. It’s a nice tune but perhaps a bit depressing.
Yes, Flaming Lips have ‘A Change at Christmas’ and ‘Christmas at the Zoo’, as well as a White Christmas cover. Deerhoof’s ‘Little Drummer Boy’ cover? The Raveonettes’ ‘The Christmas Song’ is amazing too. Lots of Polyphonic Spree stuff..
So Cow’s Christmas song ’2000 Years of Christmas’: http://www.myspace.com/abominationrecshttp://www.myspace.com/abominationrecs
Ah, Chrimbo!
You might find some gems here Jim.
