Laucan - Frames per Second review: coloured by autumn

From Rob Da Bank's ever-unpredictable Sunday Best label comes this debut from Laucan – aka Englishman Laurence Galpin. Frames per Second is a thoroughly autumnal album for one released at the height of summer.

Singing mainly in a measured falsetto, Galpin's vocals are set to the warm, golden tones of acoustic guitar, brushed drums and some lovely, swirling string arrangements, particularly on the title track. The undoubted highlight is Symptom, a minor key marvel with the best melody of the lot, while with opener Wait for the Impact a close second. Coming on like a folky take on Radiohead's Pyramid Song, it's one of several that evoke that band's more pastoral moments.

Still, the longest shadows on the record are those of Nick Drake, whose delicate fingerpicking and gift for intimacy have clearly left a lasting impression on Galpin. facebook.com/laucanmusic
