Irish tennis history was made for the wrong reasons as the Carlsberg sponsored South Leinster Open tennis championships got under way at Greystones last evening. The women's Open championship, boasting a host of international players of the past and present on it's honours list, was cancelled due to a lack of entries. Irish Federation Cup player Gina Niland entered, as did four other players of lesser calibre and the committee had no option but to cancel the event for the first time in it's history.
Irish number one Owen Casey heads a strong men's entry with Tommy Hamilton, Garbhain O Nuallain and Robert Collins in the challenging positions.
