DELEGATES attending the Wicklow County Board convention in Blessington yesterday turned down a Bray Emmets motion seeking to introduce the soccer system of disciplining players to their games.

The Bray motion had sought to allow referees indicate that a player had been booked by the use of a yellow card and that he be sent off by giving him the red card. Even though Bray Emmets were agreeable to change the colour of the cards for GAA games, their motion was still narrowly defeated by 59 votes to 57.

But it did receive the backing of county chairman, Pat Lawless. In his address, Lawless said the GAA has a need to actively compete with other sports for its previously unrivalled membership. "The teenager no longer only has GAA to play and enjoy. He or she is now spoiled for choice."
