Club career: Began his league career in 1986 when Northampton signed him from Nuneaton Borough and three years later Steve Coppell brought him to Crystal Palace where he had the best spell of his career. Unlucky to miss out, through injury, on Palace's finest hour, when they reached the 1990 FA Cup Final (v Manchester United). In June 1993 he moved to Arsenal, in a £1 million deal, but made just 38 league appearances in three seasons before he became Coppell's only signing in his short reign as Manchester City manager. Had a bright start at Maine Road but after a string of niggling injuries and a bout of sciatica he lost his place in the side and was transfer-listed by Frank Clark. Went on loan to Stockport in March of last year but a back injury forced his retirement from the game.
International career: Made his Irish debut for the B team in February 1992, in a 2-0 win over Denmark's under-21 side at Tolka Park. Went on to win 15 senior caps between 1992 and '95 and was a non-playing member of the 1994 World Cup squad. Made his final appearance in an Irish shirt in February 1995 when the match against England at Lansdowne Road was abandoned.
Where is he now? McGoldrick, 34 later this month, returned to the Corby area of Northampton after his retirement, where he and his wife Margaret had a house built, and he now works with Greater Manchester Radio as co-commentator on City games in the midlands and the south.
