Wexford went on a second-half scoring spree to win their first Leinster Intermediate hurling championship since 1965 by beating Laois in this provincial final at Nowlan park yesterday evening.

The winners looked none too impressive despite opening a 2-5 to 0-6 lead at half-time. They did so after shooting eight wides and with the aid of a penalty goal from goalie Paul Carley.

Laois were gifted a goal within 15 seconds of the re-start when a shot by midfielder Enda Meagher somehow ended up in the end. This score stung Wexford into action and within eight minutes Francis Simpson and Richard Murphy bagged good goals to take them 4-6 to 1-7 clear.

With the pressure off Wexford really opened up, and with Eddie Cullen, Justin Kenny and Jim Byrne scoring freely, they claimed their second Leinster title within the week. This time last week Wexford won the Under-21 championships.
