Weir's first victory for three years

USPGA TOUR: Canada's Mike Weir held off Australian Mark Hensby to win the Arizona Open by one shot in warm and windy conditions at Scottsdale on Sunday.

Left-hander Weir, the 2003 US Masters champion, sank a six-foot par putt on the 18th green to clinch his first Tour victory since 2004 with a final-round of two-under-par 68.

Weir posted a 14-under total of 266, one ahead of Hensby who carded a 69 to finish three shots clear of American Billy Mayfair.

Third-round leader Carl Pettersson of Sweden and American Sean O'Hair were a further stroke back at nine under in a tie for fourth place.

LET TOUR SCHOOL: Ireland's Claire Coughlan, Martina Gillen and Hazel Kavanagh head for Italy in the hopes of securing membership of the 2008 Ladies European Tour when the LET Final Qualifying School commences at Le Fonti Golf Club, Italy, today.

Coughlan earned just over €7,000 in prize money in her Rookie year and will be hopeful that the experience gained as last year's joint top qualifier will see her through this year's gruelling 72 hole event.

Gillen, having earned a similar monetary sum on the circuit, will also look to book her opportunity to realise her potential and blossom from her first year's experience in the professional ranks.

Ireland's third hopeful Kavanagh will look to continue her recent good form and secure her tour card once again.

All 94 competitors play the first 54-holes before the cut of 50 players and ties contest the final round on Friday. At the conclusion of 72 holes, the top 30 players will obtain category eight membership which will give them starts in most full-field tournaments.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: John Cook won his first Champions Tour title, closing with a six-under-par 65 for a two-stroke victory over Mark O'Meara in the AT&T Championship at San Antonio.

Cook, the 11-time PGA Tour winner began the round two strokes behind O'Meara and Tom Kite and was three behind after a bogey on the third hole at Oak Hills Country Club. But he birdied the next two holes, and added five more birdies on to finish at 15-under-par 198.

Des Smyth maintained his place in the top-30 with a level par 213 after rounds of 71 , 70 and 72 while Mark McNulty shot a final round 66 for 209.

R&A: Robin Bell has been appointed as Joint Deputy Secretary of the International Golf Federation by Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A, effective immediately.

Bell, who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, has been a member of The R&A's Championship Department since 1998, replaces Grant Moir, who is leaving to concentrate on his expanding role at The R&A.

Moir served as joint deputy secretary since 2000.
