John Ward (40) of Aer Lingus timed his bid for victory almost perfectly to win the 80th Liffey swim for men by a body length from Alan Coleman of St Vincents with Paul Byrne of North Dublin in third. Ward, a Masters swimmer, took the lead from Byrne at O'Connell Bridge. Coleman passed Byrne in a strong finish and showed plenty of stamina in a brave bid for the lead but Ward just held out for the win.

Dave Turner of St Vincents recorded the fastest time of the day, clocking 21 minutes 43 seconds. The team prize went to Guinness SC, led by Brian and Greg O'Dwyer.

Debbie Doyle of the Millennium club was a clear winner by some 25 metres from her club-mate Colette Nolan in the women's section of the race.
