Elizabeth O'Connell proved that age is no barrier when she won the Lady Captain's (Fionn Bardon) Prize at Abbeyleix last week.

The 74-year-old great grandmother shot a nett 129 off a 34 handicap to win by one shot from Kathleen Kavanagh, with Mairead Moore third and Elizabeth O'Hara fourth. The gross was won by Yvonne Reilly with 162 for the two rounds. On day one, Elizabeth, the mother of renowned cookery expert Darina Allen, took the lead with a 64 nett and to prove that her game was in good shape she followed with a nett 65 on the second day for a 129 total.
