Northern Ireland 19-year-old six-footer Danielle McVeigh is walking even taller now - yesterday she won the women's gold medal in the World University Games' golf championship at Watermill Golf and Gardens Resort in Bangkok, Thailand.

McVeigh, a student at Texas A&M University, shot rounds of 72, 75, 69 and 76 for a four-over-par total of 292, beating the international field by four strokes with an excellent score in soaring temperatures and strength-sapping humidity.

McVeigh, playing for Ireland in the women's team competition, also just missed out on a double gold medal haul. Niamh Kitching, Gillian O'Leary and McVeigh, front-runners over the first three rounds, weakened on the final day and were pipped by Mexico by a shot for first place. So it was team silver to Ireland's women with the United States third.
