UCC are aiming to carry off their third Munster Senior Hockey Cup in a row on Monday when they meet Harlequins in the final at Garyduff. If they win, UCC will be the first club to complete the hat-trick since 1953.
Rachel Kohler, the Irish international, will give Harlequins some difficulty. She has 44 caps to her name, the last two obtained in the centenary internationals against England last weekend. Two Munster interprovincial players are also on the UCC team, goalkeeper Aoife Waters and Michelle O'Sullivan.
Although Harlequins have no internationals in their ranks, they, too, field two Munster interprovincials, Aoife Falvey and Karen O'Brien.
It is somewhat strange that UCC are in the final of the cup, as they have not had a great run in the league, remaining in the bottom half for most of the season. Harlequins have done better, so on paper they should win.
However, UCC have beaten Harlequins in the final for the last two years. The cup seems to be College's speciality, as they have won it on a record 10 occasions. One fact which will add a little spice to the occasion is that Harlequins' Sarah Hutchinson was with UCC in the last two deciders.
Muckross play Loreto in the Leinster Senior Cup, which is also being staged on Monday, at Grange Road. Muckross are the holders and, if they retain the trophy, look certain to do the cup and league double again, as all they need is a draw from their last two matches against Hermes and Maids to win the championship. They have only had one game without scoring and that was back in September.
