CORK SFC SEMI-FINALS:CASTLEHAVEN AND UCC will meet in the county final after they overcame Carbery Rangers and Avondhu in Saturday evening's semi-finals at Páirc Uí Rinn.
After a blistering start, Castlehaven, county champions in 1989, ’94 and 2003, led by 1-5 to 0-0 against their Rosscarbery opponents, who struggled to get to grips with the game.
Mark Collins and Brian Hurley were outstanding in attack for the ’Haven, with the latter stroking home a 15th-minute penalty for a 1-4 to nil lead.
In defence, Damien Cahalane, son of Niall, and David Limerick were also excellent, denying Carbery Rangers any kind of space, and it took until the 31st minute for them to get off the mark.
In the second half, three John Hayes points gave Rangers brief hope but a second ’Haven goal, from Seánie Cahalane, made it 2-9 to 0-5 in the 53rd minute to put the issue beyond all doubt.
In the first match, Daithí Casey and Paul Geaney scored eight points between them as UCC overcame north Cork divisional side Avondhu on a 0-12 to 0-8 scoreline.
Featuring seven Kerry starters, UCC, who are on course for a county championship and Sigerson Cup double, were always too strong, with Peter Crowley and Niall Daly shining in defence while Avondhu’s attack faltered.
