Clashes broke out and several dozen people were arrested in Tehran last night after the first-leg win over the United Arab Emirates.
Most of the thousands of fans who took to the streets celebrated the 1-0 victory peacefully, but the gathering in the city's Chahrak-e-Ghods area quickly turned into an anti-government protest.
Several clashes broke out between the protesters and Islamic militiamen who eventually dispersed the crowd and made the arrests.
Earlier yesterday, Iran's judiciary warned youths against disrupting public order and announced that a special court hadbeen set up to deal with troublemakers. One court chief, Reza Jafari, recommended that rioters should receive pyschotherapy as part of their punishment. Jafari said that adults involved would be tried before the hardline revolutionary courts, which normally handle offences against the state.
