TRANSOM must not be missed when he lines up for the Mortar Mill Handicap at Goodwood today.
The six year old, formerly trained by Guy Harwood, is now in the care of his daughter Amanda Perrett and produced a most eye catching display when having his first run for over two years at the Sussex course last month.
Racing over a mile and a half and sent off at 40 to 1 Transom was given a sympathetic ride to finish a four and a quarter lengths fourth of nine to Hoh Express.
That would indicate that the gelding retains plenty, if not all, of the ability he showed as a three year old when a close eighth of 32 to stable companion Captain's Guest in the Cesarewitch.
On his previous start, Transom trounced Star Player six lengths over two miles at Ascot and is 6lb lower here. Earlier, he showed himself a decent sort with several good efforts. notably when third in the Melrose Handicap at York.
Although Transom has 10st here, the most he has to give to any of his rivals is 12lb. Of those, Castle Courageous and Mighty Phantom are out of form and Cloud Inspector is taking on tougher opposition than when half a length second to Nigel's Lad at Catterick.
The danger is Nanton Point, who also showed himself on the way back with a four length second to Samuel Scott at Haydock on Saturday.
However, Transom, dropped in grade, stepped up to his best trip and well treated, gets a confident vote to land the nap on an otherwise difficult day for backers.
Trailblazer is an interesting runner in a tricky contest for the £12,000 added George Smith Memorial Handicap at Newbury.
It is hard to discount many in this eight runner field but Chris Thornton's colt, the only three year old in the race, could be the blot on the weights.
That the Middleham handler sends Trailblazer so far south for his seasonal debut is intriguing in itself - he also entered Sabot - but the son of Efisio certainly created the right impression as a juvenile.
