Shigeki Maruyama let his clubs do the talking in yesterday's opening round of the $3.5 million Michelob Championship in Virginia. Maruyama piled up seven birdies to share the lead with Neal Lancaster at six-under-par 65 with half the field back in the clubhouse at Kingsmill.
The pair were just one shot behind David Toms, and one stroke ahead of Jonathan Kaye, Chris Riley and Bryce Molder.
Ireland's Richie Coughlan fired a two-over-par 73 to leave himself again struggling to make the cut. Reigning British Open champion and twice Michelob winner David Duval also struggled to a 73.
