There was more agony yesterday for Vincente Fernandez after he dumped his tee-shot at the short 15th into the water to allow rookie Allen Doyle to surge ahead and capture the championship title in Florida.

Fernandez, a five-time winner on the regular European Tour, including the 1979 PGA Championship at St Andrew's, had also allowed last year's Senior US Open to slip from his grasp.

For Doyle (50), a former Walker Cup player who turned professional only in 1995, it was his second victory of the season. The win moves him to the top of the seniors money list and also pushes him over the million dollar mark in earnings.

Christy O'Connor Jnr, playing with Gary Player, returned a final round 76 with contrasting halves of 42 and 34. He found the water three times on his front nine. He finished in joint 50th position.
