Kildare 2-13 Roscommon 1-13:Pádraig O'Neill delivered a crucial goal in the 64th minute to propel Kildare forward into the second round of the All-Ireland football qualifiers at Dr Hyde Park on Saturday.
John Doyle found O'Neill in space and the corner forward duly converted the chance at a time when his side trailed by a point.
The impressive Doyle was the essential difference between the sides as he scored 1-8 over the course of the 78 minutes played.
Roscommon recovered from a poor start but still trailed by 1-8 to 0-7 at half-time.
Kildare's Mark Hogarty burst forward before laying off to Doyle who buried the ball in the roof of the net.
In the second half Roscommon played the better football and edged ahead with points from Gary Cox and John Tiernan, while substitute David Keenan constructed a goal for Karol Mannion to despatch to give his side a 1-10 to 1-08 advantage.
The Connacht side failed to score in the final 15 minutes, however, and that inability to finish ultimately cost them the game.
Kildare's Emmet Bolton kicked a point before O'Neill swung the pendulum in his side's favour with his goal.
Despite eight minutes injury-time being played, Kildare hung on to end Roscommon's interest in the championship for 2007.
