Britain's Christian Malcolm saw his prospects of a gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon this weekend increase with the news that rival Coby Miller has suffered a broken leg. Miller clocked 20.31 seconds, the world's fastest time of the year, when winning the United States trial in Atlanta but was then injured in a pile-up after the finish. The 24-year-old American, who finished seventh at last year's Olympics in Sydney, has had surgery on a broken fibula in his left leg.

Malcolm, winner of last year's European 200 metre title, said: "It will make my chances of winning easier, but no-one likes to see anyone - even your biggest rival for a gold medal - miss the championships in circumstances like this."

Karate

The Irish Karate Union have cancelled their National Championships, which were due to be held in Clonmel on Sunday. The event will be rescheduled later in the year, once the Department of Agriculture announce that it will be safe to do so.

Motor Sport

Motor racing's world governing body The International Automobile Federation (FIA) yesterday rejected Jean-Louis Schlesser's appeal against the one hour penalty that cost him victory in the 2001 Paris-Dakar rally. The Schlesser-Megane buggy driver-constructor, who won the rally in 1999 and 2000, dropped from top spot to third after the penalty, behind Mitsubishi's Jutta Kleinschmidt of Germany and Hiroshi Masuoka of Japan.

Schlesser was docked an hour after the 19th stage of January's Rally after a queue jumping incident was adjudged to have contributed to Masuoka crashing into a tree stump.

Schlesser originally dismissed the incident as a mistake, but while he coolly raced to victory his close rival lost three quarters of an hour replacing a rear wheel.

Soccer

Dundee manager Ivano Bonetti insists there is no chance that star striker Claudio Caniggia will be moving elsewhere. The Argentinian striker has been linked with moves to both Rangers and Celtic after impressing during his first season at Dundee. But Bonetti claims that Caniggia - who has netted seven times this season - is a vital part of his set-up.

And he is adamant that the former World Cup star would still be playing at Dens Park next season. He said: "I appreciate any interest from other clubs as it shows I did the right thing bringing Caniggia to Dundee. But he is part of our plans for next season and will not be leaving."

Tennis

Tim Henman comfortably moved into the second round of the $400,000 ATP Franklin Templeton Classic in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Monday with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Spain's Albert Costa. Henman improved his record for the season to 13-3 and is trying to eliminate last year's heartbreaking loss in the final to Australian Lleyton Hewitt. He also avenged the defeat to Costa the last time they played indoors at Paris Bercy in November. "I was right on my game, I have no complaints about any part of it," said Henman. "I didn't allow him to play well and stayed in control."
