Opponents of BSkyB's planned take-over of Manchester United were yesterday cautiously celebrating unconfirmed reports that the British Monopolies and Mergers Commission had blocked the deal.
Both the Independent Supporters' Association and the Shareholders United Against Murdoch pressure group have fought a campaign against the £623 million deal. According to a report in yesterday's Daily Telegraph, their arguments have won the day with the MMC.
The MMC's report on the take-over was presented on March 12th to British Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers who will have to decide whether to confirm or overturn the recommendation.
Manchester United ISA chairman Andy Walsh said: "We are encouraged and remain optimistic that the bid will be rejected. If the MMC have simply examined the evidence and acted upon it, then the bid will be blocked.
"We believe Stephen Byers must make an early decision and put an end to this speculation, which doesn't do Manchester United or football any good."
Michael Crick, of Shareholders United Against Murdoch, said: "We are pleased to hear this but we will wait for the final outcome."
