There was growing uncertainty last night about Bobby Robson's future as adviser to Steve Staunton after his agent revealed that he will be in hospital longer than anticipated after problems arose since he underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour last week.
Jane Morgan said that while Robson continues to make progress he has a swelling of the brain in the area operated on and this has caused "a temporary loss of movement in his left leg and left arm".
"Obviously we're saddened that we're out here to play a football match while somebody we know, like and respect is missing the trip due to being in hospital," the FAI chief executive John Delaney said in Stuttgart last night. "We wish him the best and I hope it goes well for him but it's far to early at this stage to say what will happen. I'll be talking to him tonight and we'll be over with him next week and we'll get a better idea at that stage of what the medical advice is."
