Paul Carberry moved onto the 43-winner mark for the season when completing a 53 to 1 double at a poorly attended Thurles yesterday.

The Meathman gave Native Wit a typically patient ride in the EBF INH Stallion Owners Maiden Hurdle. The Liam Burke-trained mare eased to the front between the final two flights to beat long-time leader Jolly Side by a comfortable length and a half.

Carberry was aboard the easy-to-back Savu Sea in the Munster Handicap Hurdle, where stable-mate Duinin was a strong order in the ring. The latter was supported in the morning at 16 to 1 in the betting shops, and backed down from 6 to 1 to 7 to 2 favouritism on the track.

Pat Hughes' charge looked set to land the gamble when making smooth headway half a mile out until Savu Sea was produced to challenge two out. The four-yearold kept on well for a two and a half length defeat of Gillys Hope, who edged out the favourite for the minor honours.

A surprised Hughes said afterwards: "Paul got Savu Sea jumping much better today than she has done in the past, and I thought Duinin would prove best on the ground."
