It was possibly the most controversial selection in the entire Irish team. Bertram Allen, who won the Olympic place for Ireland on Molly Malone and who at selection time was ranked 10 in the world to Broderick’s 252, was sensationally overlooked. Horse Sport Ireland went for the combination of horse and rider and in their opinion Broderick had been holding the better form with his 10-year-old gelding Going Global. The selected horse and rider have been outstanding contributors to Ireland. The 31-year-old Broderick comes from outside Thurles.
