England's Jim Rhodes shot a four-under-par 68 to lead after day one of the Senior British Open at Royal Portrush. The Englishman's opening day score earned him a one-shot lead from home hope, David Jones, and Scotland's Iain Clark. Only 13 of the 132 players managed to beat the tough par of 72.
Jones looked set to post a score in the mid-60s when he stormed to six under par with only four holes left. However, three closing bogies sent the Northerner down into joint second place.
Former Irish amateur international, Denis O'Sullivan, and ex-Ryder Cup player, Eddie Polland, were the next best of the home contingent on 71. Paul Leonard posted a 72, while Christy O'Connor senior produced a marvellous performance to go round in 74.
