The Morning Sports Briefing: Keep ahead of the game with ‘The Irish Times’ sports team

Personal bests continue to be smashed by Team Ireland in Tokyo, with Róisín Ní Riain clocking another PB on her way to a third swimming final in as many days in her debut Paralympics. The 16-year-old will take part in the final of the S13 400m at 11.43am. Meanwhile Ronan Grimes will bid to add to Ireland's medal tally on the track this morning as he takes on Colombia's Diego German Duenas in a bronze medal match in the men's C4 4000m individual pursuit at 7.15am. Colin Judge however was beaten by Russia's Vladimir Toporkov 3-1 in his last-16 match having received a walkover yesterday - you can keep up to date with all of the latest from Tokyo HERE.

In his column this morning Jackie Tyrrell has reflected on Limerick's All-Ireland SHC final win over Cork last weekend - and he has urged the champions to revel in the moment. He writes: "I hope the Limerick lads have given themselves that leeway this week. I hope they are able to sit around and enjoy themselves and realise that this wasn't just any other All-Ireland. This was the one that people will be talking about for decades to come. Whatever else they go on to do, nobody will forget the 2021 Limerick team."

Rory McIlroy has made a strong start in the BMW Championship in Baltimore - he carded an opening 64 to share the first round lead with Jon Rahm and Sam Burns of the USA. McIlroy made seven birdies and an eagle as he moved to eight under par on Thursday, with Ireland's Shane Lowry seven strokes off the pace after an opening effort of 71. Four-time Major winner McIlroy gets his third round underway at 4.21pm later today while Lowry is off at 5.26pm.

Shamrock Rovers' European journey is over after they were beaten 1-0 by Estonia's Flora Tallinn in Tallaght last night - the League of Ireland Premier Division champions going out 5-2 on aggregate. Gavin Cummiskey was there to witness what he calls their "worst display of the season." Meanwhile Manchester United were handed a favourable draw in the Champions League group stages yesterday - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will face Europa League foes Villarreal, Serie A's Atalanta and Switzerland's Young Boys. Abu Dhabi-funded Manchester City will meet Qatar-funded PSG in a potential meeting of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, while defending champions Chelsea will play Juventus, Zenit and Malmo. Liverpool will meet Spanish champions Atletico Madrid, Porto and Milan.
