SCOTT QUINNELL, who is refusing to accept a place in the Wales squad following a row over pay, is considering playing for England next year.
Quinnell, who won nine caps for Wales, will be eligible to play for England next October. His agent Mike Burton last night warned that option was being seriously considered after what he claimed was a failure by Wales to stick to an enhanced pay package for the 24-year-old.
"From an emotional point of view, Scott wants to play for Wales again," said Burton, "but from a commercial perspective, it makes more sense to go for England. We made a deal with Wales and they have broken it."
The Welsh Rugby Union's director of rugby, Terry Cobner, denies that an agreement was made with the player. "An enhanced match fee was discussed, but it was not agreed because it would have meant him making more money, over a successful season, than the home-based players. That was unacceptable."
Quinnell thought he had been offered a £20,000 retainer for the season, £4,000 a match and the same for a win bonus. However, this week he was presented with a package of £10,000 for the season, subject to signing a contract, £1,000 a match and a £1,000 win bonus.
