ALMOST 200 fans were arrested in incidents surrounding last night's European Champions Cup semi final first leg in Dortmund, German police said. Of these, 76 were United fans and 122 were German, a spokesman said.

Most of the arrests were for fighting and drunkenness, though the English arrests included 10 for alleged thefts from a shop.

Police spokesman Uwe Bornemann said some of the Britons would be allowed on to planes home while perhaps 50 would be held overnight. He could not say whether any would face court charges.

He described the figures as "normal" for a big European game in the city, and added: "It was a good police operation."

Earlier the police had arrested around 20 German supporters for fighting. Police said no Manchester United fans were involved in those clashes, which occurred in the afternoon close to the city's train station.

About 3,400 Manchester United fans attended the game. Several hundred supporters of both teams had mingled in the town centre at a specially laid on party yesterday afternoon.
