Heavyweight coach Seán Casey let go by Rowing Ireland

Kerryman guided crews to fourth, eighth and 16th places at World Championships

Seán Casey, the Ireland heavyweight coach, has been let go by Rowing Ireland. The Kerryman, who guided Ireland heavyweight crews to fourth, eighth and 16th places at the World Championships, was appointed a year ago under high performance director Morten Espersen.

He continued on a temporary contract under new HPD Antonio Maurogiovanni, who has now chosen to terminate his employment. The High Performance Committee of Rowing Ireland backed the decision by the Italian.

Maurogiovanni told The Irish Times that Casey was a good coach but he hoped to recruit a new person with “more appropriate Olympic experience”.

The other full-time coach in the Ireland system is Dominic Casey, who coaches lightweights.

Meanwhile, the Ireland rowing trial set for Saturday, December 23rd, has been cancelled. Rowing Ireland endeavoured to have an ambulance at the event at the National Rowing Centre in Ovens, Cork, but could not.
