OLD WESLEY made it through to the Metropolitan Cup final as Greystones' League and Cup double hopes took a nose dive at Templeville Road.

Nonetheless were it not for a piece of good fortune from a Simon Mitchell penalty midway through the second half, the game might have taken on a different complexion.

As it was, the former Harrow schoolboy's kick fell fortunately for wing forward Michael Higginson after rebounding off the upright and when Mitchell converted to leave it at 15-3, the league champions, Greystones, had it all to do.

A rather tepid first half saw little creative play with Mitchell's 22 minute penalty separating the two sides at the break.

But after the break, a show of pace from under 19 full back Brian Murphy allowed prop Stuart Kinlan over for a score under the posts.

Greystones scrum half Stuart Hannon did something to redress the balance with successful attempt on goal but Higginson's try coupled with a subsequent conversion and penalty from Mitchell put paid to any notions of a comeback from the Wicklow outfit.
